Listing Lounge: Duplicate ASIN's, when and how to merge them

Upvote / Downvote below: Is this content helpful? Be sure to comment with any specific questions you have related to this topic.

Welcome to the Listings Lounge!

Pull up a chair and get ready to learn something new or refresh your knowledge on something you may already know.

When there are duplicate ASIN's on Amazon, it can cause customer confusion and make sellers question which listing they should purchase from. In order to improve the buyer experience and ensure that all products that are identical are on the same page, duplicate listings should be merged. This will also ensure that your ASIN's are not in violation of the Product Detail Page Rules, which prohibits duplicate listings.

There is a self-serve tool that allows sellers to merge duplicate ASIN's where you can submit duplicate ASIN's without having to contact Selling Partner Support.

Before you request a merge, be sure that the products are identical including:

1. Titles

2. Packaging

3. Part Number

4. Model Number

5. Manufacturer

If the items are not identical, the tool will not be able to merge the ASIN’s.

Note: ASINs for brands registered in Amazon Brand Registry can only be merged if the requester is the rights owner. To learn more about being a rights owner, see the Amazon Brand Registry page.

Once you have confirmed that the ASIN’s are identical, you will simply enter the ASIN’s in the tool and the listings will be reviewed. You will then be notified via the tool if the merge was successful.

imgIf the merge was not successful, but you feel that these are duplicates, you can create a case to Selling Partner Support and ask for the ASIN’s to be reviewed through a case.

If you have any ASIN’s you have tried to merge, but were not successful, please first create a case to Selling Partner Support and then create a new thread and provide your case ID that you need assistance with.

Thank you for reading this post. I hope you found this helpful. If you have any questions, please feel free to let us know!

In the Jan/San and office supply space the online tool is useless because sellers create thier own lisitngs using feed files and the sellers GTIN/UPC data which is often from national distributors.

So there are 500+ listings for common major brand items like "windex" "sharpie""clorox" etc with 100's of them being duplicates.

These duplicates are manipulated to manage the profit margin. Say 1 duplicate for item X is $15 and has a $5 margin but there are 10 other listings for item X at 9.99 and no margin on single unit sales so the higher margin items SEO,BSR and ad support when the no margin item does not.

Have you tried to have these items merged through Seller Support?

The amount of duplicates is so large it would take a dedicated team full time to even begin. There is no benefit for a third party seller to allocate the resources to managing the duplicates so it would have to be either an Amazon team or a team contracted by Amazon.

Hi @Seller_Qbd0RsfZFEZBY,

If you have a couple of example ASIN's, I can take a look to see what you are talking about and forward your feedback to the catalog team for review.

Hello @Seller_OwFy0CK4sS1nZ,

Thank you for providing these examples. In the future, please report this through the Report a Violation tool. If no action is taken, please provide me with the case ID so I can look further into the listings.

Thanks,

Michelle

Hello @Seller_WsdULSSIajCRd,

Unfortunately, I am unable to merge them due to the brands being different. For example, the brand is M&F Western Kids on ASIN: B07HKKXW4F and M&F Western on ASIN: B09PFTSX75. You would need to create a case to Seller Support and supply them with the manufactures website link to prove what the brand should be and ask them to merge them after the brand has been corrected. If they do not merge them after correcting the brand, create a new thread and we can have it reviewed again.

yup, we do this and it’s a whole other mess of denials. What should be common sense fixes by just looking at the product detail pages and brand names to see it’s the same product, become bureaucratic nightmares that eat tons of time. So we often just let these issues go because they aren’t worth fighting the endless cases and rejections.

We stop selling the products and liquidate somewhere else.

But you know who really suffers from this? The customer and Amazon by proxy..

I’m confident Amazon is losing hundreds of millions, if not more, every year to broken and abandoned listings.

If they invested a little time in preventing how good listings break and then allowed for common sense fixes to broken listings, this wouldn’t be the massive problem it is.

But because Amazon doesn’t allow seller support to do anything but check endless boxes when an intelligent human could make the right call 99% of the time, nothing productive is accomplished and great amounts of time are wasted on both sides.

So when the black hat from China has control of the listing and then merges to one of their hacked listings - what do you suppose we do then?

This is a disaster with unintended consequences ready to explode on this platform

@Michelle_Amazon

You never merge. Because Chinese sellers create 1000s fake brands in a day, so you think they are real brands. So your system says, brand of the item is different.

Why do you pretend your system is working?

See this product

You think a Chinese seller has a license to sell this product? You knowingly let fake products on your marketplace
