Listing Lounge: Surviving Search Suppression

Come one, come all to one of the hottest topics discussed in the Create and Manage Listings category on the forums.

It’s scary, it’s terrifying, it’s search suppression! 👻 *queue spooky music * 👻

I am here to tell you today that a listing getting search suppressed is actually NOT spooky, terrifying or scary at all. It’s quite an easy fix and the Suppressed listings help page shares a step-by-step guide on how to resolve them, but first, let’s get into some of the reasons why a listing might get suppressed.

Our research shows buyers have an improved shopping experience when a listing has complete product information, with images, category (item-type), titles (parent titles), and price per unit (PPU) along with less than 80 characters for apparel, shoes, and luggage categories and 130 characters for all other categories. By having all of the product information filled out, it is easier for customers to find, evaluate, and purchase products on Amazon.

If we find listings to be incomplete, we will hide (or suppress) them from search and browse non-media listings since the detail page was not meeting our standards. This means that customers will not be able to find a listing in search if that listing is suppressed.

By now you may be wondering what are some examples of incomplete listings that may get suppressed?

  • Child listings in Shoes without: A Department value, A Size value, A Color value
  • Child listings in Jewelry with: A missing or invalid Department value, except for Jewelry Accessories , Incomplete or invalid Material type, Metal type, Gem type, and Pearl type specifications, except for Jewelry Accessories (as of August 1, 2017), A UPC (if the brand is on the Major jewelry brands list)
  • Child listings in Watches and Luggage without: A Department value
  • Child listings in Consumables (Grocery, Beauty, Pets, and Health & Personal Care) without: A unit count and value (This one is commonly discussed on the forums)
  • These requirements also apply to listings with variations. For example, if a listing has different sizes, the child SKUs for each size must meet the requirements above. (Example of variation product titles can be found here)

As I hinted above, identifying and fixing a suppressed listing is pretty simple:

  1. In your seller account, click the Inventory tab, and select Manage All Inventory.
  2. Select Suppressed from the horizontal menu. (Note: "Suppressed" is only visible if you have suppressed listings to improve. If you do not have any suppressed listings, this option will not be visible.)
  3. View all suppressed listings on the Fix your products page, or click Attribute to filter by specific type of issue.
  4. Option A: Fix suppressed listings in the Issue(s) to fix column by entering the missing values in the editable cells or selecting missing values from the drop-down list and clicking Save.
  5. Option B: Fix suppressed listings that are not fixable in the editable grid (Option A) by clicking Edit and going to the Edit product info page. In Edit product info, the missing product details will be highlighted and you will see informational messages that further detail the issue. For non-image issues, enter the missing value and click Save and Finish. For image issues, follow the guidelines on the Product image requirements page and then upload valid product images.

Just a reminder that some updates to detail pages may take up to 24 hours to process and appear live on the website, so please be patient.

If for some reason you have made the appropriate updates to your listing and it has been over 24 hours but the listing is still search suppressed, contact Selling Partner Support. In order to help speed up the review of your listings, please provide the following information when creating your case:

  • ASIN experiencing search suppression
  • Reason the ASIN is search suppressed
  • Share what steps you are taking to try and update your content
  • Provide any Batch ID numbers or spreadsheets that you used to update the detail page
  • Provide a link to the manufactures website with proof of what the information should display
  • Screenshots showing the updated information on your listing but the listing still showing as search suppressed

That about wraps it up for our discussion on search suppression today! You were very brave to face search suppression head on and get it fixed so your customers will have a better experience when shopping on Amazon.

@Cooper_AmazonI am a little confused, I got approval to list a branded item. I correctly listed the item, gave all of the appropriate details. Listing was live and selling for 3 weeks. Item was selling very well. All the sudden, amazon pulls the product description from the product and seller support cannot give me an answer as to why. Then they tell me I'm not the brand owner so I cannot edit the product description. Even though I am the listing owner and was approved to list under this brand's listings. I have had to open several cases, the description gets added and taken away every other day. While I appreciate the steps you have outlined, these do not work if you are not the brand owner. EVEN IF you are the listing owner and are approved to sell under the brand. You CANNOT update it later. So what is the point? And how can KI get my listing to stop pulling down the description when the item is perfectly fine and selling? Thanks.

I especially enjoy that sponsored search trumps everything. Let them buy our brand names and hot selling product titles and list stuff that is in no way similar.

Good Evening All,

I have spoken with a few of my colleagues and have collected best practices to update an attribute on your listing (which is relevant for fixing suppressed listings as well):

Start Here:

  • Go to Manage Inventory, select the listing, edit the attribute (if it's not greyed out) and save the edits.

If that does not work...

  • Upload a partial flat file submitting the information on the attribute you would like to update on the ASIN (ensure you are selecting to update the ASIN and NOT overriding it) Wait 24 hours to see if attribute updated.

If that does not work...

  • Upload a full file feed (which generally assists when making multiple changes) and check to see if the changes were successful after 24 hours. If they were not successful, you should have an error message and a batch ID. (Record that information and take screenshots)

Reach out to Selling Partner Support and provided them with the following information:

  1. Share the Full File Feed
  2. Error Code you received when submitting your feed
  3. Batch ID of feed file you were using to update attributes
  4. Reasoning behind why you were trying to perform this action. (For this example, seller's should share with support they were editing attribute (INSERT ATTRIBUTE) on ASIN (INSERT ASIN) as it was search suppressed for (INSERT REASON FOR Search Suppression) reason).

Just a reminder that some updates to detail pages may take up to 24 hours to process and appear live on the website, so please be patient.

Note: If the ASIN you are trying to update is not brand registered, you can still create a case to have information edited as long as proof is provided to make edits to the listing (For example the manufacture's website showing the correct attribute).

If Selling Partner Support is unable to figure out what the issue is when editing your listing, sellers are more than welcome to reach out to us on the forums and begin a new discussion, select the Create and Manage Listings category, and use the tags, ‘Detail Page’ and ‘Listings’ .

Every search suppression case can be different from one another. I will admit when researching this topic and reviewing the help page on Search Suppression it seemed like there was a, 'one size fits all approach' and that is definitely not the case. (Especially as we receive many different scenarios on the forums each day).

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the information shared above and have a good night.

Sincerely, Cooper_Amazon

What if you were simply trying to make partial updates to your products and for some reason Amazon decides to remove the images and other info, thereby suppressing it, even though the images are still in the backend, but not live? It seems like any time I try to make updates it's removing images and suppressing them for almost a week and I have to get seller support involved. And we're brand registered!

Also, *cue

Here's the problem with that, if you are not the original lister, then you cannot change any of the information.

why are full product descriptions pulled straight from the item source removed suppressing the item? Also other issues like size, color, theme, manufacturer, etc. all get randomly removed.

Why is the browse node on an item that is correct completely removed, or changed to another language, suppressing the listing but not making it obvious unless you try to search as a customer?

You are right. It is not scary. I just move the item to sell on a different platform.

Solves the problem EVERY time!

@Cooper_Amazonthis is basically useless information. Anyone - even brand owners - that have a listing go search suppressed cant repair them. so yeah - its more scary than you lead on and its kinda insulting that you come here acting like its such an easy fix that anyone can do it. nice try

Thanks.

I had one the other day that said only the brand owner could update and guess what? They were wanting the BRAND added! So who can fix that one?

I especially enjoy that sponsored search trumps everything. Let them buy our brand names and hot selling product titles and list stuff that is in no way similar.

Everyone I talk to knows that search on Amaozn is a waste of time, and they're buying elsewhere.

Myself ncluded.

(Especially as we receive many different scenarios on the forums each day).
