Listings Lounge: Error 8572, UPCs, GS1, and You

Good morning everyone,

This last year we have been providing a lot of education on Error 8572, even before we “opened“ the Listings Lounge:

Learn more about Amazon Error 8572

Listings Lounge: What you need to know about 8572 Error codes

However it seems like many sellers are still unsure of how to resolve this error.

To give some background, this error occurs because the GS1 UPC cannot be verified, as belonging to the Brand that is associated with the ASIN. You can learn more about how Amazon verifies UPCs as valid in the Valid UPC help page. The best way to ensure that you don’t run into this issue is to ensure the information used to create the ASIN, the Brand for example, matches the information on GS1 associated with the UPC owner. It must match exactly, any variance in characters or name may result in this error.

If the Brand and the UPC Owner aren’t identical, you will need to demonstrate that the Owner and the Brand have a relationship as mentioned on theError 8572 help page.

In general, the team will request the following information in order to showing the relationship between the UPC owner and the Brand:

  • Product Name
  • Manufacturer name
  • Brand name
  • UPC or EAN or ISBN or JAN along with GS1 certificate

I can understand that folks have had real difficulties resolving this type of error, but this process ensures that only the UPC Owner creates ASINs using that UPC. If you have questions on this error you haven’t gotten answered, please let us know what you are having any confusion about. If you have a specific offer that has been stuck without resolution, please create a new Thread with your details and case ID, and we will investigate further.

Thank you for your time everyone and have a great day.

-Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Two weeks ago, I attempted to update the old FBA parent-child listings for 21 of my products with variations (Color/Size). These listings were originally created in August 2022 and had been selling without any issues until I made some updates 15 days ago. Unfortunately, the listings became stranded after the update. I re-listed them using the same SKUs and ASINs, and they went live again. However, when I tried to recreate the parent-child relationships, I encountered error code 8752, requiring GS1 certificates for all 21 listings.

The problem is that these listings were added to the Amazon catalog two years ago, at a time when Amazon allowed the use of UPC codes from third-party vendors. We purchased those UPCs and used them for the listings. Now, Amazon is asking for GS1 certification, which we don't have.

As the brand owner and sole seller of these products, I contacted Seller Support multiple times to request a GTIN exemption for these ASINs so we could resume selling. I explained that for any future listings, we would purchase GS1-certified codes. However, for these existing listings, we urgently need to create parent-child variations because they don’t sell well as individual listings.

I’ve tried multiple approaches, including deleting and re-adding the listings via a feed file, manually creating parent listings and variations, and following support instructions to mark the 'K' column (Is exempt from supplier declared external product identifier) as "NO." Despite all this, the error persists, and Seller Support keeps insisting that GS1 certificates are required.

It’s been 15 days, and we have stock but can’t sell. This situation is incredibly frustrating. If anyone with experience in resolving similar issues can help, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
