How does Amazon determine return label with USPS or UPS?

I just experienced the first month of automatic return label charges on my account.
(Does anyone know when it started?)

I downloaded a report and to my surprise I was charged for some returns UPS and others USPS

However most of my items are very light and I ship them First Class. (I offer free shipping)
Should Amazon not use USPS if I ship USPS?

These are the questions I don’t seem to get Amazon to answer for me when I open cases:

  1. Why is Amazon’s First Class more expensive than what I paid for when I ship?
I usually pay about $2.70 and I see charges of $3.35 for the same item. Maybe insurance or signature confirmation?

  2. How does Amazon determine if they charge for UPS and for UPS? I know they claim by weight but clearly in my case they did not. No one seems to know I see official statement but clearly they are not following it. My items are not heavy.

  3. I filed a claim for UPS charges and was refunded (Strange) I mentioned that item was not heavy and no need for UPS and they refunded me. But having to file a claim every time is becoming a full time day job lol
    Is that the only solution?

  4. I noticed when labels are requested but not used your account is still charged. I had to file a claim and was refunded. Will I have to do that every time or will it happen automatically after some time when label is not used? And how can I tell from report if label was not used. Is there a code for that particular situation?

  5. Where can I find what the codes mean on return reports? Is there a list?

  6. Why do I have to pay for return label if buyer chooses “Orders by mistake” How is that my fault?
I had a few like that. I know there is a list of return reasons that include this reason and amazon charges you but why are we responsible for someone ordering by mistake? Its seems unfair…

Another note:
when I file a claim for return shipping the answer to the claim is emailed to you but when I go to the claim page in amazon the answer is not found in claim notes which it makes difficult to reopen the case or even answer. Very difficult. It would be so much easier if I could open the case page and also read the answer to my case in the case page itself.

Please I have posted in forums before I am not interested in Bullies telling me I am stupid or putting me down. I will not respond to them this time you know who you are. We should all feel free to post here without having anyone try to act superior. Thank you.

It went into effect on 02 October 2017. The e.mail I received explaining the changes was entitled “Important update—Amazon is simplifying returns” and was dated 31 July 2017:

Dear Seller,

Amazon is simplifying the returns process on items fulfilled by sellers. Starting October 2, 2017, returns of items that you fulfill and that fall within the Amazon returns policy will be automatically authorized. Customers will be able to print a prepaid return shipping label via the Online Return Center instantly.

We are also introducing ‘returnless refunds,’ a feature that is highly requested by sellers. If you so choose, you will now be able to set rules and automatically issue a refund without requiring an item to be shipped back to you. Sellers have requested this because, in many cases, it allows you to save on both return shipping and processing costs.

We hope these changes will reduce the effort required to manage your returns and decrease your customer Return Dissatisfaction Rate (RDR), thereby improving your ratings. Additionally, you will have full visibility into the end-to-end return process through shipment tracking information located on the Manage Returns page in Seller Central.

Below are a few key details:

  1. You are required to have a return address on file. If you want to specify a separate return address, please update your information in Seller Central (https://sellercentral.amazon.com/gp/on-board/configuration/global-return-address/index.html). If you have not specified a return address by October 2, your business address will be used as the return address.

  2. You are required to issue a refund within two business days of receipt of a return. If you do not take action regarding the refund request, Amazon may refund the customer on your behalf and charge the amount to your seller account.

  3. You might be responsible for the cost of return shipping in accordance with Amazon's policies.

  4. Certain items are not eligible for prepaid return shipping. You can request exemptions for specific items in your inventory after August 31.

  5. You can appeal return disputes directly to Amazon.

To learn more, visit the Prepaid returns for seller fulfilled orders help page: https://sellercentral.amazon.com/gp/help/202072200

Early participants have seen RDR go down by an average of three times after offering prepaid return shipping. If you would like to begin offering automatically authorized prepaid returns to customers before October 2, please respond to the survey below by August 11 to on-board by August 25.

Thank you for selling on Amazon.

Sincerely,
The Amazon Selling Team

We have customers return a 2 ounce embroidered patch original sale $9 free shipping, in a big box by ups marked 5 lbs.

I find it very rude when customers do this.
