fraudulent return using UPS/USPS but little thing Amazon do about it

Recently we had multiple FBM returns that were frauded by the buyer. Basically, the buyer received the return label generated by Amazon, then falsified the return address to make it go to the right city / ZIP but a different street address.

Those buyers are very "experienced" and "knowledgeable". They hope the seller will never receive the return package thus have no way to charge any restocking fee but have to issue a full refund. If a seller is not issuing the refund, the system will automatically issue a full refund after 48 hours after the return package is shown as " returned to seller".

This kind of fraudulent activities work only 10%~15% with UPS as UPS usually generate a separate label during transit and for most times UPS will only deliver to the right address based on the original EDI address from Amazon when the return label is generated instead of to the address ( in the same city ) that the buyer hopes it will be delivered to. Unfortunately this way so far it works 100% with USPS as post man just delivers it to the address on the label without further validating with their internal system.

Of course the buyer returned a piece of crap and left us a negative review. Even the UPS way of fraud does not work and we seller charge the restocking fee, we are still at a loss. We tried to charge 100% restocking fee, but it won't be processed by Amazon. We tested and it seems 85%~90% of restocking fee would work. Plus the negative feedback made us loose the buybox which heavily impacts own further sales.

For one USPS return that we did not get, Amazon issued a full refund as we did not. We got a report from local USPS confirming the return address on the label is NOT seller's return address, and then opened a safe-T claim. The claim was declined.

We saw the same type of return fraud happened with Ebay / Paypal years ago and they took care of it and covered seller's loss.

We suspect those fraudulent returns are made either by dropshippers or competitors.

Hello! @Seller_RarKQCL75ZIRy

This is Roberto. Thank you for using the Forums, I am sorry you have to deal with this situation, did you use buy shipping services with your orders?

If you had, you may have the option to file a claim with the carrier for additional coverage.

Optional coverage for loss or damage

If you have a particular order that was denied through the SAFE-T claim path, feel free to share the Order ID here?

Regards,

Roberto
