Recently we have heard or seen some sellers facing a drop in their sales claiming that Amazon is changing their system, while others claim that it’s because of the summer season and a lot of people are on a vacation so, fewer people are buying right now. Although it’s true that it’s the summer season and people less likely to buy these days, there is a serious change in Amazon’s system.
Some of these issues is related to an Indexing Problem and in fact, it affected some of my listings and dropped my sales, also have seen other sellers have the same issue too, so if you not aware of this issue, please continue to read.
Keyword Indexing is a very important key in your sales, when people search for a specific term related to your product, your product must show to them in order to let people buy it, but what if you only indexed for one keyword? then you will only get sales from this particular keyword and lose a huge amount of sales from other keywords that is related to your product, but it doesn’t show when people search for it.
Indexing means basically you tell Amazon that when people search for these terms show them my product, usually, these terms are the keywords in your title, bullet points, product description, and backend keywords. When Amazon miss some of these keywords, your sales might be in a risk of not getting sales from these keywords.
So where is the problem?
When i tried to figure out how can i increase my sales through ranking for more keywords that have a huge search volume on Amazon, i discovered that i am not even indexed for some of the keywords that i had already in my backend keywords although they are related directly to my product, and some of these keywords have a great potential to sell well, but suddenly when i tried to see if it’s indexed or not, they were not indexed which means i lost potential sales from these keywords.
So, to find out if you have the same problem, apply the following method on your main keywords try 10 or more keywords to get a good result and see if you still indexed for it or not, if you are indexed, probably the problem of sales drop maybe other things than indexing so you may check your competitors, optimize your listing, price, photos, season, and so on until you find the problem. But if you are not indexed, most probably your sales dropped because of an indexing issue so, start optimizing your main keywords, remove duplicates from your backend keywords and other listing details and submit the modifications again.
The indexing findings method:
Write in the search field in Amazon: (Your ASIN) (keyword you want to index for)
i.e. if the ASIN is “BQ85GH5Z2” and your keyword is “Garlic Press”
you have to write in Amazon’s search Field: BQ85GH5Z2 Garlic Press
if it shows “We found 0 results for “BQ85GH5Z2 Garlic Press”” then you are not indexed for this keyword, and if it shows “1 result for"BQ85GH5Z2 Garlic Press”"
So, this just an insight about the problem, i have read that some sellers contacted seller support and told them they are not indexed for their main keywords and they actually solved the problem for them, so you may contact them also hope they will fix it for you too.
Hope this article helps you, if you have any thoughts or comments, please leave it below.
Not sure what is going on with your listings.
I have been working on this for the last couple of days with one listing and I made changes earlier today and they are indexed.
Too me that seems faster than in the past.
Might be that my item is not being throttled yet so all the backend words are active, its just a guessing game on here.
Update: I misspoke, they are not all updating that quickly. Changes from earlier today are not being indexed.
ahhh, the old garlic press example, love it, its literally what pops into my mind when describing an example product lol
Thank you so much for this information. We have been on Amazon over four years and have been very successful. Also selling on the bay for 10 years. We too have seen a huge decline in sales over the past couple of months. We sell sporting goods clothing which is a great item all year. Right now sales should be strong for back to school and fall sports, but we have been doing 50-60% less than previous summers.
I read your post thoroughly, please forgive my ignorance. I know what key words and search terms are for sure, but I do not understand what you mean by indexing. Can you please explain a bit further. Thank you so much.
When adding to the search terms, the directions say “no asins” . So it might work for now but you might find it to bite you sooner or later.
I and a few other people have found that the words in our DESCRIPTIONS are not being indexed. Now, the backend keywords are indexed and working just fine. Check yours & tell us what you find?
I wish Amazon would either fix their problem or stop messing with the system because it is causing all types of problems for sellers and customers. That is not good for everyone, including Amazon because people are going elsewhere to buy what they can FIND here…
I am having this exact issue and have a ticket into seller support.
I will follow up here when/if they reply.
