Listings Lounge: Locating Your GTIN Exemption Documentation

Hi Sellers,

Welcome back to the Listings Lounge. For those who have never created an ASIN, we wanted to talk to you about the necessity of a GTIN. Lots of Sellers run into lots of issues trying to create new products in the catalog but get stuck because they are missing this important attribute. A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is an industry-standard product identifier used to create new product pages and offer listings on Amazon. If your product does not have a product ID, a.k.a. a GTIN, and you cannot retrieve one from the manufacturer, you might be eligible to request a GTIN exemption. The exemption means you will not have to associate a GTIN while creating your ASIN.

We have seen some posts expressing difficulties locating the GTIN Exemption. Once requested and processed, your GTIN Exemption would show up in a number of places. These are:

  1. You should have received an email within 48 hours advising if the exemption was approved or denied
  2. Your View Selling Applications page. This is accessible by going to Seller Central, clicking the Hamburger Menu → Catalog → View Selling Applications
  3. Your case log. This is accessible by going to Seller Central, hovering over “Help” at the top right of the page → Manage support cases

If you run into difficulties locating your GTIN Exemption or failed to receive a confirmation email, please create a case with Seller Support.

Please note: If the categories you are planning to list in are restricted, you will also need category-level approval in addition to a GTIN exemption to start listing products. If you do not have this approval already, go to Overview of Categories for more information on category-level approvals and apply accordingly.

Resources:

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)

List products that do not have a Product ID (UPC, EAN, JAN or ISBN)

Product ID (GTIN) requirements by category

Overview of categories

If you have questions regarding a GTIN Exemption that was approved and you want it reviewed, please review this post. If you still need help from a Community Manager after reviewing the post, please begin a new discussion, select the Create and Manage Listings category, and use the tags ‘GTIN’ and ‘Listings’ .

What are the eligibility criteria for not having a GTIN/UPC code associated with the product?

Is there a risk of exemptions being granted to products that already have GTINs, but resellers or other parties want to create a separate listing?
