Listing Lounge: Your GTIN Exemption Was Approved, But Now You Received An Error Message. What's Next?

Have you ever been approved for the GTIN Exemption and then you received an error code. If so, kindly continue to read this Error Code Help Guide that you can not only learn more about the error codes but also how to resolve them. Fear no longer, don’t let these error codes stand as a road blocker to growing and running your business.

Hot Tips: Things to Remember

* After you have applied for a GTIN exemption, check the status of your request in your case log.

* Once you receive a GTIN exemption, wait 30 minutes before adding your product in the same way you would while listing with a GTIN. Our system will identify the GTIN exemption and allow you to proceed without a GTIN (product ID).

* In certain cases, category-level approvals may be required in addition to GTIN exemption approvals to start listing products on Seller Central. In case you are unable to list products using an approved GTIN exemption, we recommend that you check if you are already approved to list in that particular category. If you do not have this approval already, go to Overview of categories for more information on category-level approvals and apply accordingly.

* For the exemption to work, be sure to enter the Category and Brand/Publisher name exactly as they appear in your exemption approval notice. If you use a different case or insert additional characters or spaces, the system will not recognize your exemption.

* After approval, you can leave Product ID and Product ID Type columns blank.

* You can re-apply for an exemption in case you have taken a GTIN exemption under an incorrect brand name or category.

* A GTIN exemption is only given to list products without a product ID. You may be required to obtain additional brand approval to list your products.

* You will have to apply for the GTIN exemption each time you want to list under a different brand or category.

See below for several error codes that you may come across:

Error Code 5665

Error Code 5665 occurs because the brand attribute on a listing does not match the name of the brand that produced the product.

To fix Error Code 5665 you can:

Option 1: Request for approval for a brand name by enrolling your brand in Amazon Brand Registry which is a program for brand owners designed to help protect their Intellectual Property (IP) and manage the accuracy of their listings.

Option 2: List a non-branded product as generic which are unbranded products that do not belong to any identifiable brand. Please note, that it is a policy violation to list a branded item as generic or another brand and can lead to an account suspension.

Error Code 5461

Error Code 5461 occurs because you have not been authorized to create new ASINs for the brand.

To fix Error Code 5461 you can:

Option 1: Seek approval to create the new ASIN if you can show that it is an authentic product of the brand for which no ASIN exists yet via Seller Support.

Hot Tips: Include the following below in the 5641 approval process:

* Real-world images of the product and packaging, meaning that the picture is of the product and packaging being handheld or set on a table. The images should include angles from the front and back of the product and packaging, and must include a close up of the barcode and GTIN (unless you plan to get approval for GTIN exemption). The brand name should be visible on the product and packaging. Clothing items should be unfolded.

* The brand name used when creating the listing.

* UPC/EAN/JAN (this is not required if you’ve applied for a GTIN exemption).

* Product category.

* Manufacturer

* Product title (including details of variations in color, size, measurements, model or part number, item weight and so on). See Amazon product title requirements for more information.

* Product description (including details of variations in color, size, measurements, model or part number, item weight, and in the case of books include publisher and author name).

* Batch ID of your inventory file process report along with the error code received (if using inventory files).

* For the product you’re trying to list, provide the existing URL link that is used in other retail stores or sold directly by the brand owner from their Direct to Consumer (DTC) website.

Once the 5461 application is approved, you will be able to move forward with your listing experience and create a branded ASIN. You will only be authorized to create the ASIN for which approval has been granted and the time limit for ASIN creation can vary as per the brand and will be limited to 96 hours.

Error Code 8541

Error Code 8541 occur because the Amazon catalog features products sold by many sellers. In order to prevent the same product from appearing multiple times, Amazon uses product matching to find and eliminate duplicate listings. Product matching helps you match your product to an existing listing. It then adds your offer information to that listing and if a product does not yet exist in the catalog, you can create a new product detail page. Good product matching directly benefits the seller as it ensures that customers can find your offer.

To fix Error Code 8541 you can:

Option 1: match the catalog data you submitted to clear the conflict. If the catalog data is incorrect, you can open a case with Seller Support to evaluate your request to fix the data.

Error Code 8542

Error Code 8542 occur because your Product ID (UPC, EAN, JAN, ISBN, etc.) is currently associated with two or more ASINs, but the other attributes you have provided in your inventory template (title, brand, color, size, etc.) do not match with any of these ASINs.

To fix Error Code 8542 you can:

Option 1: Check to make sure that the Product ID you have provided is correct. If it’s incorrect, enter the correct Product ID in your file and resubmit. Then update the attributes in your file to match those in the catalog (these attributes are provided in the error report) and resubmit your file; OR replace your entry under the Product ID and Product ID Type column with the ASIN provided in the error report and resubmit your file.

I hope this Error Code Guide has clarified the reasons behind the errors and assists you in proactively preventing them. In cases where the error codes occur, you now have the necessary tools to resolve them.
