Importing 101 for FBA Sellers: Part 2

Hello Everyone,

We are back with Part 2 of our series on importing goods for FBA series! If you haven't seen part one you can find it here: Importing 101 for FBA Sellers: Part 1

Once you've got the importing process squared away, it's time to actually ship your goods to the Amazon fulfillment centers. There are a few key things to keep in mind when addressing and documenting these shipments.

When shipping imported goods to an Amazon fulfillment center, the fulfillment center may be listed as the deliver-to party on your shipping documentation. Work closely with your customs broker to ensure that you have the proper documentation and complete information for your shipment to clear customs. Make sure that your contact information is included on the shipping documentation in case of questions regarding your shipment.

Another quirk to be aware of is the handling of "Section 321" shipments. If your imported goods qualify for duty-free entry under this provision of U.S. customs law, CBP requires you to list the merchandise owner's full name "in care of" the destination FC on your shipping manifest. For example: "John Doe c/o FBA."

When it comes to the actual customs entry filing, you'll want to work closely with your customs broker to ensure all the required information is accurately included. This includes details like the harmonized tariff schedule (HTS) codes for your products, the declared value, and any other pertinent data. Inaccuracies or omissions on the customs paperwork can lead to major headaches at the border, such as shipment delays, holds, or even seizures.

Similarly, make sure you provide your freight forwarder or carrier with complete and up-to-date contact information. This is crucial in case they need to reach you regarding your shipment during the customs clearance process. Outdated or incorrect phone numbers/email addresses could result in delays or the shipment being returned.

No matter what, make sure you work closely with your freight forwarder, carrier, and/or customs broker to ensure you have all the right documentation and information included on your shipments. Their expertise can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of importing goods into the United States for FBA.

Feel free to reach out if you need any clarification on properly addressing or documenting your imported FBA shipments. I'm happy to provide more guidance!

Best,

Dominic
