Welcome back to the Listings Lounge!
About a year ago, I posted about the issues with 8040 errors and wanted to bring this to the forefront again as we have been getting contacts on this issue again.
Have you come across an 8040 error you’re not sure what to do? This article will walk you through the steps to take to proceed.
Error 8040 is the Match Only Variation Error. You may receive this error if you try to create an ASIN variation but you’re not a brand owner or authorized reseller of the brand. Recently we uncovered a technical issue that caused brand owners and authorized resellers get this error as well. To resolve this, there’s a new process for you to follow in Seller Central, which I’ve outlined below.
How to steps for brand owners and authorized resellers to resolve Error 8040:
Step 1: From Seller Central find the Help link. It’s visible in either the top right or bottom left corner of the Seller Central homepage. Select either Help land follow to the next page.
Step 2: From the Get Help page, select Trouble adding a product and select Received an error code or message.
Step 3: Select your exact error code, which is Error 8040 - Match only variation error. Then select next.
Step 4: Complete each of the fields on this form (ASIN, Product ID, Product Name, Brand Name, Manufacturer, Category, and Product Description), and then click Continue.
Step 5: You will need to supply a Feed/Batch ID, if applicable. You can obtain this from your previous flat file upload. Then click create case.
Step 6: You will be provided a case ID for your request.
Step 7: Now that your case has been created, the corresponding team should acknowledge it within 48 hours. You can then follow the case under the Case Log under Help. If your request gets declined and you are a brand owner or authorized reseller, please resubmit the help request again.
We hope these steps are helpful in resolving any issues you’re having with this error. If you’ve got any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to ask them in the comments below. If you have a specific question about your account, please create a new thread and we will be happy to look into it for you.

This does not help at all. The issue I believe a lot of sellers are facing is the fact that if you get approved for the variation and you successfully recreate the variation it will just be torn apart a week later. Not to mention the frustration of being approved and being told to wait 24 hours to be able to tell support that the approval doesn't actually work. Then they tell you to wait 48 hours and you get stuck going in circles.
We need an explanation as to why variations randomly get separated. Every week a handful of the brands we sell (Yes we are authorized resellers) get separated and we have to go through the rigmarole of submitting the application and being told we've been approved when we actually have not.
Why is Amazon separating variations randomly? sometimes it takes a week to get them back only to be destroyed again. It seems it would be much more beneficial to Amazon to keep variations together, am I wrong?? It is detrimental to sellers when this happens.
Probably the most frustrating issue selling on Amazon. (for us at least.)
