USPS Scan Produces Wrong Tracking on Receipt?

Hello,

USPS picked up packages yesterday as usual and scanned in each box.

This morning, I was checking to make sure each order was in transit and I noticed one was not.

I compared the receipt I received from USPS against the actual shipping label and I notice for 1 digit of the tracking number, the receipt shows an 8 instead of the 3 that’s on shipping label.

Yes, it’s going to the right city and the weights match up and there is no other package that shipped with a tracking number anywhere close to this sequence of numbers.

I find this very odd and wonder if anyone ever encountered this and will the package ever show in transit?

That’s weird. If they were all scanned in (instead of being manually keyed), I don’t see how there could be a discrepancy. It’s a bar code. Regardless of what the receipt says, are you saying that tracking is not showing for one of the packages when you link out from the tracking number on your postage vendor site (whether it’s Stamps . com or Amazon’s postage or whatever)?

Also, no judgment here, just a question: Do you always check every package’s tracking?

I had one package go to a completely different state and city…just wandered off all by itself. Me and the customer verified the address, etc. We looked at tracking and it ended up like 1000 miles away! Go figure. Luckily the customer didn’t blame me and I sent her another item…using the same address of course, and it got there just fine. Weird. Oh, and the package never showed up…

The USPS tracking number has a check digit to catch an error like that. If one digit was wrong, the scanner wouldn’t have accepted the scan and you wouldn’t have a receipt for that parcel. As said above, you’re probably misreading the receipt and online tracking of the parcel is coincidentally delayed.

Most likely it will be updated and corrected at the next scan. Something similar happened today with two packages (out of over a dozen) shipped over a week ago.

Just out of curiosity, what does tracking show for the number you are supposedly reading on the receipt?

I have a total of 6 bar codes since Christmas that the scan sheet activated- and the postal system has never acknowledged their existence from start to finish. No delivery complaints.

I think there is occasionally an issue with numbers being recycled too soon or something along those lines- maybe recycled but never plugged into the USPS system on their side before they were sold to me…

It’s a super rare thing, but it does happen- you may never see them in transit.

Of the 6 times it happend to me- 4 were in one batch at Christmas- and the other 2 were about 2 weeks apart from each other - about a month ago.

No font issues for sure- when I typed them in by hand to USPS to this day they still report nothing.
