Listing Lounge: Navigating Policies and Best Practices when Adding or Updating a UPC

Hey folks! Welcome back to the Listing Lounge!

Today we wanted to discuss how to add or update a product UPC.

You may be having trouble updating a UPC for a detail page due to the following reasons:

  • Other sellers may have the product you were previously selling and may have listed on the page you originally created.
  • Changing major pieces of information on a product detail page can lead customers to think they have purchased inauthentic items, leading to customer dissatisfaction.
  • Updating a product's UPC could cause issues at the fulfillment center when there are multiple UPCs for one ASIN.

You may also be getting “invalid” error messages when you try to update your UPC because:

  • Your UPC has not been verified as valid, as indicated by the Valid UPCs help page. UPCs must be registered in the GS1 database to be seen as valid.
  • The information on GS1 doesn’t match exactly what you provided to Amazon. This includes the Brand as well as the UPC owner information.
  • Details in your GS1 Database contribution are not the same as your Seller Account information. If they don’t match exactly, you will run into issues. The information is case sensitive!

Review these policies in order to update a product UPC:

  • You cannot edit, update, or add the product ID for a listing that has been created with GTIN exemption. Product ID is a non-editable value and cannot be modified once a listing is created.
  • If you want to update the product ID for a listing that has been created with GTIN exemption, you must delete and create a new listing of the product with a GS1 approved product identifier.
  • If you have added a new UPC to your product, you can help guide customers to your new ASIN by following this post on the Newer Version Widget. This will help customers find your new listing and help build new reviews.

Key Definitions to keep in mind:

  • UPC: Universal Product Code is a 12-digit number and barcode used to identify products in retail (online or physical) stores.
  • GS1: GS1 is a global organization that provides a standardized system of data standards and helps identify products in the retail industry.
  • SKU: Stock Keeping Unit is a unique identifier that retailers use to track inventory levels for specific products.
  • ASIN: Amazon Standard Identification Number is a unique 10-character alphanumeric code that Amazon assigns to each product in its catalog.

If you still need assistance after reviewing the policies, open a case with Seller Support to help resolve the issue. Be ready to provide the following information to request an internal review:

  • Screenshot of the error (Timestamp with batch ID)
  • The brand name
  • The complete title
  • The UPC
  • The store
  • Batch ID
  • The GS1 certificate or a screenshot from the GS1 database showing the UPC or EAN and the owner
  • Proof of relation between the brand or the manufacturer and the UPC or EAN owner

If you have a specific question about UPC codes and have already reached out to Selling Partner Support, please begin a new discussion, select the Create and Manage Listings category, and use the tags, 'Add a product', ‘ASIN,’ 'GTIN,' ‘Listings,' and 'SKU.'

Thank you for joining us on today’s Listing Lounge. Cheers, @Cooper_Amazon
