Brand Approval vs Brand Registry - The Critical Differences

Hi Sellers,

Do you know the difference between Brand Approvals and Brand Registry on Amazon? I’m here to explain. 🙋‍♀️

Think of it this way: Brand Approval is getting permission to sell someone else's brand, while Brand Registry is registering and protecting your own brand on Amazon with a trademark.

Here’s a break down on what each program offers!

Brand Approvals: Permission to sell someone else's brand

  • Required permission to sell specific brands
  • Applies to sellers wanting to sell existing brands
  • Requires documentation (invoices, authorization letters, etc.)
  • You don't own the brand, you're getting permission to sell it

Brand Registry: Registering and protecting your own brand on Amazon with a trademark.

Note: If you are not the trademark owner but have a relationship with the brand owner, you can also request a selling role or a protection role and be added to represent the brand.

  • Brand Registry is a program for brand owners to protect their own brands
  • You must own/represent the trademarked brand
  • Requires registered or pending trademarks
  • Gives brand owners tools such as...Enhanced content (A+ Content), Brand store creation, Brand analytics, Protection against intellectual property violations, Brand reporting tools and more!

Note: If sellers don’t have a trademark but want to list under a brand that does not exist on Amazon, please reference the Brand name approval requirements and issue resolution.

How did you decide what was right for your business? Let me know in the comments if you have any specific questions!

@Sandy_Amazon

Dear Amazon Brand Registry Team,

I am writing on behalf of Stay Another Day, Ltd. regarding our Brand Registry application. We recently encountered an issue where our application is showing as "under review" when we attempt to reapply. We previously submitted an appeal and received a response, but we are now unable to edit our application or proceed with reapplying due to this status.

To clarify, we initially faced a mix-up between our seller account and brand registry application, as both were submitted separately. Our brand is officially registered under the trademark "Stay Another Day," and we have ensured that our information aligns with our USPTO registration.

However, we are now experiencing a technical block when trying to reapply, as the system indicates that our trademark is under review. We kindly request guidance on how to proceed. Please let us know if additional documentation is needed or if there is an alternative way to update our application.

Thank you for your time and support. We look forward to your response.

To contact us again about this issue, please access your case using the link shown below (Brand Registry account login required):

Hi! @Sandy_Amazon,

I'm hoping you can help me understand this more. On some of my products, I receive this message:

5665: Request approval for “Allen R. Shuffleboard Co., Inc.”

The brand name you have entered has not been approved by Amazon. Request approval here by submitting an application for “Allen R. Shuffleboard Co., Inc.” and Amazon will review it. Once approved, you will be able to use this brand name in your product listing.

Is this related to the "Brand Approvals" you mention or a different type of Amazon approval? We've been selling under this name for years and it only pops up on some of my inventory items (and these items are not new), so I'm very confused.

If it's related to the Brand Approval you are discussing, as the brand owner, how do I approve my own ability to update the product information on these items?

Thank you!

My case ID is 17323593191

I provided all the documents and the response is automated and always the same as below:

a) your account was engaging in conduct that violates Brand Registry’s policies, such as, but not limited to, invalid notice submissions through our notice submission channels or tampering with the catalog;

Does not apply

b) your application or account is related to other Amazon accounts or brands that have violated Amazon or Brand Registry’s policies,

Does not apply

c) you are associated with one or more selling accounts as a primary owner and all of them have failed seller verification,

Does not apply

d) inability to provide sufficient evidence of branding on products/packaging;

I provided it

e) you have a selling account that is de-activated, or

i re-activated(after the first time i applied for brand registry when it was deactivated, i didnt know), all stores status are "active"(green text)

f) your trademark application appears to be filed by a filing firm that may be violating US federal regulations and USPTO rules (explained below).

This one i am not sure, but he did receive registeration confirmation for another brand within the same time frame of my application. so i assme it should be ok

I got an email from Amazon last night saying "Your appeal for Brand Registry enrollment application "LA SERNA NATURALS" has been rejected,...This decision was made since we could not verify the registered business name and business identifier".

Case number: 17343097581

But I have provided my Alaska Business License number as my business identifier. I just did a business License search on State of Alaska website, and my business license pops right up.

Maybe the problem is in my address. Up here in Alaska, we all have two addresses, physical and the mailing address. my business license as well as my USPTO show only the mailing address. But my drivers license shows only my physical address.

Please help me get my brand registered so I can start selling my hand-made products.

I have a complex issue that I never get help with.

We started selling in 2016 as a manufacture "brand owner" named "DMSO" When brand registry rolled out, we were to say grandfathered in .. meaning our sponsor brand advertising, store front etc was never taken away.

We have since applied for a trademark under DMSOSTORE but was denied and now int he process of creating a log for the brand. So, we have some functions of brand parts.

The issue is, since 2016 other sellers use the brand "DMSO" when they do their listing get tied to our amazon store page, policy page, customer service info and we get calls from other brand customers.

When I contact seller support, they refer to Brand Registry. Since we are not technically a registered Brand for either "brand name" no one will address the issue. they just say "DMSO" is a generic brand, and many sellers can sell under it.

However, this becomes a waste of our time, and poor customer service to the buyer when another brand is associated with our Brand name and store front.

just feel bad for these customers who call us and we say sorry not our brand, your order # is not one of ours, we don't sell that item, but yes that seller is attached to our brand and phone number.

Any Insite how to address this would be great. I

How do we set up our brand to have 'brand approval' We fight knock-offs continually. We are brand registered for years, but we can never lock down our brand and 'gate it'. piggybackers sometimes jump on and sell fakes under our listing. Please advise how we can add the brand approval needed to sell our products for our trademarked and patented product to protect against the non stop patent infringing knock-offs all over Amazon

Brand Registry doesn't protect brands anymore than Amazon protects the sellers.

Unfortunately, this is disturbing for most.
