Selling chef's knives

Hi
I heard that you cannot sell chef’s knives on Amazon.uk but how about on FBA at amazon.com? I’m planning on selling high quality Japanese kitchen knives imported from Japan, but I don’t want my account to get suspended by the ignorance. Can I sell kitchen knives through FBA in US? Thanks in advance.

The first place to start is to make sure you have permission from the manufacturer to sell their high quality knives on Amazon before you import them. If Amazon lets you sell them and the manufacturer does not want you to sell them on Amazon, you could have big problems.

Are others selling them…?

Yes you can sell chef knives on Amazon.com.
No problem whatsoever. (Hunting knives or those designed as a weapon is a different story.)
But use common sense.
Best if they are packed in protected blister packs. Or if they are high priced, in a jewelry type box with special insert.
As a minimum, the blade should be covered with a plastic or paper sleeve and the tip should also be covered by special plastic blade tips. Then packed in a strong thick vinyl envelope.
This would avoid the blade puncturing the package. You don’t want anyone to get poked. Not in storage, shipping, or the customer.
Also, Amazon demands sellers that have gross sales of 10K for 3 consecutive months to have liability insurance.
Your cost would be higher selling kitchen knives than someone selling lets say wooden toy blocks.
Good luck

Thank you. Each comment was very informative. So concluding this, we can sell kitchen knives on Amazon.com FBA if packaged well with, if required, manufacturers’ approvals, and need to have liability insurance if sales is over 10k.

We sold kitchen knives here for many years and sold them in fba. We only stopped when Amz began selling themselves. Be prepared for that to happen if they do really well for you.
Minimum premium for liability ins was about $500 to $600 per year last time I shopped around. Could be higher and does make a difference what you sell.

I have gotten to review several chef’s knives over the years for Amazon. If you are planning on selling high quality chef’s knives, then you need to sell them like a high quality knife. Everyone came in it’s own special package so that they looked gift worthy, nor did they present a problem while in the post. If you just sell a knife without any personalized packaging and just bubble wrap and whatever, your customers may not be happy. It may work if you are selling way under the $100 price point, but it you want to sell higher than that, you have to impress the socks off your buyer as that is what they expect.

You can sell chef’s knives. I have done it. However, you cannot sell all brands. For example you cannot sell Henckel’s knives – but you can sell Shun knives (which are better knives anyway). The difference is that the Henckel’s knives have a Limited Warranty that requires the knives be purchased from an authorized dealer for the warranty to be valid, and Shun honors their warranty no matter where you purchased the knife. Amazon does not allow items with an invalid warranty to be sold as new on Amazon.
