Thanks for the offer! John Wainwright placed the first order with Amazon, a book called, Fluid Concepts And Creative Analogies by Douglas Hofstadter.

"I think I’m the customer mentioned in the other answers, I did indeed buy Hofstadter’s Fluid Concepts on April 3rd, 1995 (it’s still in my order history listing!). I’d heard that I might be the first non-employee customer, but could not get it confirmed. BTW, I still have the book and the original Amazon packing slip!"

The first item ever sold on Amazon was a book titled "Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought" by Douglas Hofstadter. It was purchased in July 1995, shortly after Amazon launched as an online bookstore.

The irony is that Amazon started selling books (so that was the first item) and NOW you go out of your way to make book selling "difficult."
Amazon knows no shame..................
