Read onlyForcing us into Automated Handling Times unless we deliberately slow down our handling just doesn't make any sense. We can't wrap our brains around it.
We do both FBA and FBM. The same people that pick our orders also prep our items for FBA. Having flexible handling time with a little bit of padding is essential for creating a balance between packing for these two fulfilment methods. Some days there are more self-fulfilled orders that take up nearly the whole day. Some days we really need to get a lot of FBA prep work done.
It just make sense to group similar tasks together instead of trying to constantly start, stop, and switch between different activities.
Just one example out of dozens I could come up with:
If we have 15 orders for the exact same item... it makes sense to go grab all 15 items and pack them all at the same time, regardless of whether or not they are all "due" to be shipped.
Now, if we want to avoid automated handling times, we're going to have to say "Wait, stop. Only do 5 of those 15 orders because they're not all due today."
It's just counter-intuitive. And it's going to take A LOT of extra brain power and discipline to actually slow down on purpose rather than always try to do as much as we can at at time.
How is this really better for anyone?
We have our handling time set for 1 day. So for example I got 3 orders today (Saturday 8/31) the orders say Ship By: Tuesday 9/3 (with Monday being a holiday). It does not say Ship ON 9/3 but ship BY 9/3. If I ship today Saturday 8/31 via USPS .. is that bad in the eyes of AMZ? I am totally lost here. any suggestions? Even with 1 Day handling we get emails from AMZ as part of our Monthly FBM fulfillment Performance Overview showing we are handing packages to carrier 1.1 days before promised handling time we set. Also shows our carriers delivered packages 9.6 days before the promised Transit Time. I ship whenever an order shows up while I am able to process it... many times I am not able to ship till next day.
idiots are born every day.
only Amazon actively recruits them.
Does anyone know, will we still be able to juggle our handling times with the downloaded excel spreadsheet? We all need a day now and then for doctor appointments or bad weather or whatever. Vacations make my listings disappear. It's better to always just change handling times.
Yes I am holding back orders to be shipped. I have explained multiple times that different times during the year allow you to ship faster where as for example around holiday one needs more time.
Again absurd implementation without considering consequences. Same thing with coupons. Postage goes up and you cant up prices and run coupons unless you wait for a period of time. Who thinks of these ideas?
@SEAmod
I have been looking at this since they announced it in July. This is Everything that I know about OTDR, Shipping, and Dates on Amazon
pack all 15 items, but put 10 of them in a bin for the following day?
Not hostile; different businesses have very different needs, and what works for one doesn't work for another.
But Amazon doesn't care; they want to cram us all into the "one-size-fits-all" model.
Questions ...
1) What was your handle time set to before turning on AHT to get the exemption?
2) When you turned on AHT and waited the 5-6 days for response, what handle time did the AHT give for those orders which came in during that period?
3) What was your beginning AHT gap? Did you try to lower it to under 2.0 before applying for the exemption?
Our plan of attack has been different. Our original AHT gap was 2.5 and we have lowered it to 1.7 over this past month. Because the shipping component was changing first (Sept 25, 2024), we decided to work with changing to Shipping Settings Automation (SSA) first. We made sure we set up our shipping template as Standard Shipping only and with only USPS Ground Advantage (less than 1lb) as the shipping services. So far, we have not had a late delivery using the SSA estimated deliver by dates. However, it is a little scary as about half of the orders are delivered on the very last estimated deliver by date. It will be interesting to see what happens during the holiday period when USPS is running slow. All of the orders that have come in under SSA have shown that the estimated delivery date was calculated using USPS Ground Advantage (less than 1lb) data ... so that has been good.
Look forward to hearing you AHT answers ...

Notice how none of the Amazon moderators have posted in this thread.
Prob because they can't explain or defend it.
I want to go to Accelerate to try to speak to managers/directors at Amazon to actually see if they even understand this ... but I am quite confident I wouldn't be able to speak to anyone significant. I am not even sure why they hold that event when they seem so hell-bent on ending the third-party seller system.
Everyone is up in arms over nothing. Its simple fix. Adjust your handling times. Amazon will only opt you into automated handling time IF you are shipping 2 days faster on AVERAGE than you set handling times. So if you have it set to 2 and you ship most of your orders out same day then they will opt you into automated handling. This forces sellers to set ACCURATE handling times. Customers NEED accurate shipping times. If it says it will be delivered Wednesday and it gets delivered on Monday that isnt a benefit. Customer could be out of town monday and it sitting on the porch for two days likely means it will be stolen. Treat you business like a business and it wont be a problem.
