AMazon RUINED small businesses

Dear Mr. Bezos,

I hope this message finds you well. As a small business owner, I am writing to share significant challenges I’ve encountered with Amazon FBA, which have jeopardized my ability to operate and grow my business on your platform.

I recently purchased inventory to launch my store. Following Amazon's instructions, I submitted all required details in the Seller Central system, including box dimensions, weight, and the number of units. The system approved the information, and I shipped two boxes using UPS, an Amazon FBA partner. One box was standard, and the other was an Amazon-reused box.

A week later, I received an email stating that one box had an "oversized issue," and my account was blocked until I acknowledged responsibility. Trusting the process, I accepted this, believing it would resolve the matter. However, when I checked my inventory later, I discovered that over 200 units—valued at approximately $7,000—were missing. These units were purchased for under $2,000, representing a significant financial loss.

When I reached out to Amazon, I was informed that the second box exceeded the weight limit—initially said to be 23 kg, later changed to 22.5 kg. This contradicts the fact that Amazon’s system had accepted the weight during submission, and UPS, as your official partner, had validated it. My request for an investigation was denied, and the case was closed without resolution.

To make matters worse, I was directed to a link stating that Amazon reserves the right to destroy items. As a small business owner, this is devastating. While the financial impact may be negligible for Amazon, it is overwhelming for me and threatens my business's survival.

Broader Concerns

In addition to the missing inventory, I’ve encountered several systemic issues on the platform:

Repetitive Verification Processes: I was required to verify my account three times, submitting identical documents, which caused unnecessary delays.

Platform Inefficiencies: The Seller Platform repeatedly requested duplicate information for items and shipments, creating confusion and errors.

Inconsistent Measurements: Parcels validated by UPS were later deemed oversized or overweight by Amazon, resulting in penalties.

Unfair Practices: While small sellers face these barriers, other sellers appear to list questionable or counterfeit items, including fake anti-COVID products, with fewer restrictions.

Request for Action

Investigate and compensate for my missing inventory.

Address the systemic errors that create barriers for small sellers.

Align Amazon's internal measurements and policies with those of UPS, its shipping partner, to avoid future inconsistencies.

I admire Amazon’s mission to empower entrepreneurs, but these practices have made it exceedingly difficult for small businesses like mine to succeed. I trust that, under your leadership, Amazon can address these challenges and restore confidence in the platform for sellers.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

FYI Jeff is not in control anymore and the likelihood of any peer on this platform being able to do anything is NULL but I applaud your efforts to outline your issues. Hope you feel better after venting and trust you have reconsidered using FBA for anything at all

Amazon isn't going to care. They do not care that you're a small business. They do not care you got hurt. They do not care to follow policies and their policies basically say, they can destroy you with no reason. They will mess up and go against policy, but you usually only have one try and one appeal and it's final. Even if they're wrong. Bots There are zero business ethics in place and morals were thrown out after they paid off their loans and became profitable. 3rd party marketplace sellers, U.S. small business carried Amazon on their backs and as a thank you, they kicked most of them out from false policy violations and started branding a lot of that product themselves. And anyone left is milked like an entire dairy farm of money from fees, fees, and more fees. FBA was always a bad decision from a business perspective. Even I saw that many years ago. But now they're really hitting FBM sellers hard too with manipulation by forcing Buy Shipping or no coverage and allowing A-Z claim after A-Z claim for false reasons. It's so bad, some employees got together and said, well, let's not count them on ODR for Package didn't arrive and tell seller that's a good thing while stealing their money.

Best is to start small with AZ FBA to See How Things Go...Many Bots & Algos conflict & if you get caught up in them little can be done. Try FBM for a test case...

You have highlighted issues that exist, perhaps one of the reasons may be due to excessive bureaucracy. Layers upon layers have really hit 'high confusion' on the 'RACI' Matrix within Amazon. Each request gets reviewed by multiple teams and sometimes gets denied by a different team that recently came into the picture. To say the least, AZ Management is slow to fix root causes.

Customer Service is more like an AI bot service for sellers, issues get dragged to multiple days. All of these symptoms are stemming from a lack of Management understanding in navigating these tough times where Amazon is getting tough competition, is not sure how to handle excess Warehouse capacity from COVID, has a depleting employee workforce with higher churn rate and a Management in place who needs to show a profit to Shareholders to maintain/get bonuses.

Tough times are ahead.

Make sure you let Mr Bezo's know about the new Deferred Transaction step put in place to hold Sellers money even longer. Amazon is making money off the interest by holding Sellers money. It should be illegal if its not. No other platform does that.

Jeff, or anyone in administration is going to read this...even if they saw it.

You registered as a new seller on Amazon and immediately sent in 200+ to Amazon's warehouse? I would have started with FBM to get my feet wet; Or even sent in a small amount to better understand the process first.

Well here are you. Your best bet is a Mod community manager who can escalate your case to the internal team.

Always insure your shipments with the carrier for large shipments like this, heck even use smaller boxes to maximize your insurance claim.

I concur. Amazon has been consistently ruining my small business also. Bots ( I think) run through my store about every 6 months and eliminate or remove my listings for the most little thing. Can I fix it? nope--I get locked out of making any minute corrections that may (or most of the time maynot) be needed. If i can make a correction it has to be approved by seller support that never happens. Lately they've been going after my pricing even though I am exactly on my guidelines with my suppliers with MAP pricing. Amazon shuts down my listing claiming I am charging too much. Can I talk to somebody about this? nope, it goes back to sellar support which I don't think even exists anymore. As a result my sales are down about 60%

I am sorry, I understand. I am slowly pulling a lot of my inventory out. I had my best two months in November and December, and all to pretty much get wiped out with fees. It's all real sad and I put my savings into starting this business. Going to more seller fulfilled and other platforms. Was hopeful the FBA would be a great idea, but unfortunately it was one of the worst.
