I started to print shipping labels for packages I’m shipping in the morning. I noticed a new selection for what USPS offers, USPS Priority Mail Cubic. I looked around a little bit on the USPS website and did not see anything about it.
Does anybody know what Priority Mail Cubic is and where can I find anything in writing on what it is and what kind of packages is eligible for Priority Mail Cubic?
Google is your friend, if you Google the phrase it will take you to stamps.
There is a three-dimensional bluish drawing that shows what the sizing is. The text reads as—
USPS Cubic Pricing
What is USPS Cubic Pricing?
USPS Cubic Pricing provides high volume shipping customers discounted rates for small, heavy packages. Priority Mail packages weighing less than 20 pounds and measuring no more than 0.5 cubic feet in volume are eligible for Cubic Pricing as long as you meet the minimum package requirements. For these packages, customers will pay shipping costs for the actual size of the package and the shipping distance instead of its weight.
Compared to other shipping carriers such as FedEx and UPS that only offer pricing based on weight and distance, USPS Cubic Pricing is a great alternative to help lower shipping costs. In order to qualify for Cubic Pricing, customers must ship over 50,000 packages a year.
Obviously because of volume Amazon has been able to negotiate these rates.
Yikes! This is big…I’m going to be using this all the time. Should save a ton of money
I am also looking for this information and cant find anything yet about Cubic with Amazon…
and want to know if we can use any free USPS Priority box for Cubic
Priority Mail Box 1097
Dimensions: 11-1/2" x 13-1/8" x 2-3/8"
Cubic Tier 0.2
Priority Mail Box 1092
Dimensions: 12-1/8" x 13-3/8" x 2-3/4"
Cubic Tier 0.3
Priority Mail Box 1095
Dimensions: 15-1/4" x 12-3/8" x 3"
Cubic Tier: 0.4
There are more, but they are not a good shape for books, so I don’t know the details.
EDIT: There is one more book-shaped box, but it seldom beats a small box stuffed into a padded FR envelope
Priority Mail Box - 1096L
Dimensions: 9-1/4" x 6-1/4" x 2"
Cubic Tier 0.1
With the addition of cubic rates, Amazon has taken one more step to everything ships priority(or faster).
I suspect that this is their long term goal.
I’ve been using the cubic pricing with Pirate for shipments outside Amazon and on Amazon for some shipments and it’s wonderful.
Having it in Buy shipping is huge!

Can items be shipped in Poly mailers?
So for rms’ link I would say poly mailers would work since padded mailers are mentioned.
1.4.4 Determining Cubic Tier Measurement for Soft Pack and Padded Envelopes
Cubic tier measurements for soft pack and padded envelopes are based on the outside dimensions of length plus width, in inches, of the original packaging material. Mailpieces that are pleated (e.g., expandable) must follow the measurement guidelines in 1.4.3 to be eligible for cubic pricing. Determine cubic tier measurements as follows:
Measure the length and width separately in inches.
Round down (see 604.7.0) each measurement to the nearest 1/4 inch. For example, 10-1/8 inches is rounded down to 10 inches.
Add the two measurements together. The maximum total of length plus width cannot exceed 36 inches. See Exhibit 1.4.4 for corresponding price tiers.
I’m hoping they extend this option to the Buy Shipping API. As of now, I don’t see a way to use it with ShipStation. If SS doesn’t enable it, or if Amazon doesn’t make it available via the API, that will be a serious blow and will force us to use Seller Central for shipping. It saved us about 10% for Seller Fulfilled Prime USPS shipments today.
From my recent support chat with SS:
Got it, yeah it looks like it has not been fully made on this side just yet. It’s possible for that to come over but nothing of yet has been implimented or planned.
