After advertising with amazon for a year I’ve managed to reach the third page of search results in the keywords I wanted, but haven’t been able to crack the coveted first page. Using the sponsored products ads amazon only gives an estimation on how much you should spend so your ad will win bids, but makes no mention on where they’ll appear.
Anyone have any tips or tricks on seeing your ads appear higher in search results using sponsored ads? Or is it a matter of increasing my bid until it gets there?
Keep in mind that ads will display differently to different shoppers based on their device, location, and shopping habits amongst other factors. So just because you’re not seeing your ads on page 1, doesn’t mean it’s not being displayed there for others. End of the day, it doesn’t really matter what page your ads are being shown on. What really matters is the performance of your ads in terms of sales generated and the cost of those sales (ACoS).
If you’re at/above the maximum bid range, odds are decent that you’ll appear at or near the top of the page, depending on relevance and sales history relative to similar buyers. But Nomad’s right, aiming for #1 doesn’t mean much because
1.) Amazon doesn’t want you to be #1 for everybody, they want differentiated search results for different customers based on their previous buying habits and
2.) it might not be cost beneficial – even if you can engineer yourself to the spots you want, those sales might be noticeably more expensive
Shoot for sales, as sustainably as possible. Sales matter more than anything to Amazon.

Regarding the front page, Nomad is correct.
Regarding costs -> Do you check your search term reports? Adding negative keywords based on search terms that generate no income can help keep your ACoS down. Also, after running Automatic PPC ads, consider switching to Manual ones once you have enough search term data gathered. You can effectively lower your costs to <10% of sales.
