A customer indicated they wanted to return an item and I wrote back to them how to proceed. I have not heard from them for two weeks. How long does a return request in days, stay active. It appears the customer may want to keep the item now.
The only way to close return requests that are approved is to refund. If the item is not returned, you do not refund and the request simply stays in its current status. We have been selling on Amazon for years and that is simply how Amazon works. The buyer will lose access to print RMA and any labels after 30 days of the return being approved.
If the item is shipped late back to you, Amazon allows you to assess a 20% restock fee.
In our experience, about 30% of all returns never come back. Buyers change their minds, forgot, found a solution to whatever issue they had, gave it to someone else, etc. Returns that are approved and never come back never get refunded and the return request expires on the buyer side in 30 days – the status on your side will never change; unless you refund.
Amazon knows that not all returns come back, so there is no metrics tracking status of your return requests. I would not give it another thought. If it does not come back, we keep the funds. If it does and it is late (as would be in this case), we charge the 20% restock fee allowed by policy.
Just remember that due to Amazon’s hideously long holiday return policy:
The Amazon Extended Holiday Return Policy requires that orders shipped between November 1 and December 31 be returnable through January 31 of the following year. This policy includes orders that are shipped by you and orders that are shipped by Amazon.
The return will stay 365 days on your RETURNS PAGE whether the customer has used the return label or no. The return eventually will just fade away.
