Does USPS tracking ever says 'lost'?

I sent package on September 19 via USPS. The tracking info says “Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way. It is currently in transit to the next facility.” I start to think my package is just lost. Do you know if USPS ever says ‘lost’ in their tracking information? Or that long ‘Your package will …’ is just an equivalent of ‘lost’?

Have filed missing mail claims and eventually gotten the reply that, sorry, it was lost.

No they do not tell you if the package is lost on their tracking system.

The best thing to do would be to contact USPS and open a case just to be on the safe side.

I’ve never seen lost. You can open a claim with USPS (prepare to sit on hold forever) and someone will call you back to tell you the package is lost.
We consider the package lost if there’s a week with no updates and delivery.

I think ‘delivered but error with delivery scan’ is more likely than it being lost. If this was an order, and you haven’t heard from the buyer since mid-Sept, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Delivery scans get missed on occasion. Sometimes carriers miss them, and sometimes the equipment has issues. As I understand it, there are two types of scanners the carriers use. One is wireless and sends scans into the USPS system in real time. The other scans the data into the carrier’s device all day long, then get plugged into an upload station at the end of the day to transmit all the data into the USPS system. If you’ve ever tried uploading anything, you know certain pieces can get missed for various technical reasons.

USPS doesn’t give the real status of a package very often. If a customer doesn’t ask you about the package, it is delivered. I have about 50-100 packages per year with uknown status. It is very annoying, as I constantly have to warn my buyers and send them messages.

I have a package that says the same thing was supposed to be delivered Oct 18. Says delivery attempted no access to location and then it’s been in transit for weeks. I can only assume it was lost or delivered. Haven’t heard anything from the buyer.

Make sure you put in a claim with USPS right away. Their window for those is pretty short. If you wait for them to “investigate” and try to find the missing package, you will be too late to file a claim.

By the way, they will never really try to find the package. You’ll get occasional updates saying they are still looking, and then finally one that says, Oops, we tried but we cant find it.

USPS will notify you if an item in Damaged in Transit, but they will Never say Lost in Transit. If they did say it was lost in transit, the public may get the impression they will replace the package. :train2:
