I received the following email today.
Dear Seller,
On January 30, 2018, we will update the inventory file template to include an additional attribute called “Fitment Type.” This attribute will have two available values: Vehicle Specific and Universal.
The additional attribute will improve the customer experience, since customers will be able to check whether a part fits their vehicle before purchasing. It may also increase product views, as well as reduce fitment-related returns.
The Fitment Type attribute will be optional for 60 days after it is added to the inventory file template. On March 31, 2018, it will be mandatory.
We appreciate your cooperation, and thank you for selling on Amazon.
Sincerely,
Amazon Seller Services
I’ve thus far avoided trying to add fitment data to my listings since the process seems so complicated. I sell my own brand so ACES data does not currently exist. I created all my listings individually using Amazon’s online tool and do not have excel templates for them.
My question is what does this new policy mean for me? It refers to an inventory file template, of which I have none. How do I go about updating my listings so they satisfy this new requirement? Additionally, for new listings, does this mean I won’t be able to use Amazon’s manual online tool anymore, and must upload them via a file template?

I am speculating that they are in the process of rolling it out soon. The template is likely in the works, and you have time to prepare before it starts. 30 Jan is when it supposedly will start, which is still 3 weeks away.
I have found on many purchases in the automotive category for replacement auto parts that Amazon or some other sellers send out parts that do not match the listing page.
Example–Your car is listed at the top as (This Fits your car)But Amazon sends you a part that does not fit.
Listing shows a 6 cylinder engine, but Amazon sends you a part for a 4 cylinder engine.
This happens all the time and it’s very disturbing to a buyer.
Inventory File Templates - +Note: These templates are for U.S. Professional sellers only.+
An inventory file template is just a way to create or edit multiple inventory listings at once. If you’ve never used one, you still won’t have to. Listing management can be done in one of two ways. (1) Individually and manually, which is the way many smaller sellers do it, or (2) in bulk via an Excel file (inventory file template) upload, which is the way most higher volume sellers do it.
If you go into ‘Edit’ a listing, you know there are several tabs with multiple spots where you enter product information. An inventory file is just an Excel spreadsheet where each column represents one piece of info you’d enter if you edited the listing manually. There are columns for SKU, price, size, weight, color etc. You can fill in all the data on the spreadsheet, for as many products as you want, then upload it to Amazon, and they’ll put all your information in the correct spots on your listings.
The email you got says they’re going to add a new required field you must fill in. If you manage listings manually, you’ll see a new field on one of the tabs that wasn’t there before. If you use inventory files, there will be a new column on the spreadsheet.
What it should mean for you (and other sellers of auto parts) is that, sometime after Jan 30 and prior to March 31, you’ll need to edit each of your listings to fill in a value for this field or your listings will be temporarily inactivated or suppressed until you do.
You can do it either manually, or through an Inventory file upload. Nothing is changing as far as forcing you to do it one way or another, the email was just written with language directed more towards sellers who upload their inventory in bulk. Maybe people have their processes automated, and if they’re using an instruction that says ‘put this value in the fifth column’, if Amazon changes the spreadsheet, which makes the value belong in the sixth column now, they’ll need to change their software.
Got this email about Fitment Type as well. Our concern is we sell spare tire covers. They are NOT vehicle specific. They are tire size specific. We have variations for the top 24 sizes but have over 200 sizes of tires we make tire covers for (we just have a listing for CONTACT SELLER if your size is not listed). We have over 400 designs which equals around 10,000 SKUs. Are we going to have to make MORE SKU’s for the other 175 sizes (which would equal 70,000 more SKU’s) and get that completed within 7-8 weeks? It took us over a year to upload and add the photos the the 10,000 SKU’s. We are a little ‘shell shocked’ as to exactly what this is going to entail for us.
It looks pretty easy the way I’m reading it. You just have to put in one of two values: 1) ‘Vehicle Specific’ or 2) Universal. I don’t think, at this point anyways, that they are asking for the actual vehicles they are for.
So, if you list a Sun Shade (that goes cross the windshield to keep the car cool when you’re not in the car), you’d put ‘Universal’ - If you list a Sun Visor (say for a 2015 Camry), you’d put ‘Vehicle-Specific’ - You don’t have to put in the year, Make, Model, etc. of the car it goes on.
It would be great if Amazon allowed us to add the specific vehicles it fits in the feed also…

Hi,

Thank you in advance
