oops my customer has returned the item months ago and I can not refund him to his original payment type because he does not have access to it. He has asked me to send it to his Amazon gift card can I do this and if so how or what can I do?
You are never in control of where the refund goes; all you can do is press the "Issue Refund" button, amazon takes care of the rest of it. If they cannot refund the customer's original payment method, then the credit should sit on their buyer account.
