Changes to shipment confirmation for seller fulfilled orders

Starting January 1, 2021, online marketplaces (OMP) are responsible for charging and collecting VAT for sales to the UK from overseas sellers to comply with the new VAT regulation announced by the UK government.

To support this requirement, we have made changes to determine the actual “Ship from address” information when you confirm shipments that you fulfill. If you are selling to customers in the UK on Amazon, then you are impacted by these changes.

We have added a new “Ship from address” field as a part of the shipment confirmation workflow. There are three areas where we have included the new field:

  • If you confirm shipments through Seller Central, the new “Ship from address” field will appear on the Confirm Shipment page. We will pre-select the default ship from address provided by you in your Shipping Settings. If you have shipped the order from the same address, you can confirm the shipment by providing other details following the usual shipment confirmation process. If you have shipped the order from a different address, then you must provide the actual ship from address.
  • If you confirm shipments using our Shipping Confirmation templates, then you will find the “Ship from address” field added to the template. You must enter the actual “Ship from address” in this template to confirm shipment. If you leave this field blank, then Amazon will use the ship from address you provided in your Shipping Settings.
  • If you confirm shipment using MWS APIs, then you will find the “Ship from address” field as an additional field. You must enter the actual “Ship from address” when confirming shipment. If you leave this field blank, then Amazon will use the default ship from address you provided in your Shipping Settings.

These changes will be available by the end of November 2020. If you are shipping to customers in the UK and are impacted by the new tax regulations, please start familiarizing yourself with these changes and be ready to comply and use these features starting January 1, 2021.

Amazon should be spending its lobbying money eliminating laws like this. It is bad for business and makes doing business a lot more complicated.

I won’t even be reading this right now if the headline had read “Changes to Shipment Confirmation for Seller Fulfilled Orders for the UK Marketplace”. Unless I’m missing something!

My virtual assistant in the Philippines who provides market research is now (as of this morning) presented with a dialog box asking to “Choose your location”.

Because the website obviously knows the IP address is OCONUS (outside of the continental United States), it does not allow her the ability to type in a US based zip code. As a result, the revised list of sellers provides a false view of prices and sellers which ultimately impacts my business decision making abilities.

Has anyone else experienced this and is this announcement/change a contributor to this dilemma?

Stopped selling overseas years ago. I mostly sell Media items and they are made in a different region code. Thankfully I don’t have to deal with this as this is going to be a mess

The seller is NOT responsible for the buyer’s VAT taxes. So is Amazon going to add the VAT tax to the buyer’s order or are sellers just being screwed on this? The way the announcement reads in the bullet points, the VAT is not added until the seller is >confirming shipment< which is way after the buyer has paid. If determination of VAT applicability is after the fact, how do sellers recoop the tax? The standard VAT tax rate in the UK is 20%. Sellers can’t eat that without overpricing items.

I just read the UK policy paper and it seems clear that goods of all prices must pay VAT at point of sale. All sellers must register for VAT and keep electronic records of VAT paid for six years!

Not needing these further complications for relatively few sales, I am going to stop overseas sales. Case closed.

Hi,
When using Amazon MWS API, could you please tell us where to find the updated documentation ?
Unfortunately, general mws documentation is not mentioning such new field “Ship from address”… (which does not make sense in XML standard by the way…)

Thanks
Charles
