How many days do buyers have to RETURN the item?
what the title says........they open a return before the 30 days, then a week goes by, and hasn't been mailed back. When can we close the books on it and complete the return with nothing sent back?

You can't, they have an open ended return period. After a month or so it will disappear if they don't use the return label. Half the time they never return it. I had a return after about 3 months a while ago. The person was clearly using the book for a class. I refunded them a small amount to avoid an A-Z.

According to the "Return policy overview" section here, after a return is authorized, "the buyer has 15 days after the return window closes, allowing for transit time, to return an item."
And if the buyer isn't responding or hasn't returned the item, this help page mentions you can "contact the buyer again and state that you will not be able to accept the return after 30 days."
So in your case, since a week has passed without the item being mailed back, I'd suggest waiting for the remainder of the transit period. If they don't return it by then, you can contact the buyer and close the return request.
