Why Would You Recommend Selling on Amazon?
I wouldn't. That's my honest, hard-earned, unchanging opinion.
But I'm sure you'll get some delightful responses from those new-to-the-game.
I realize this is probably part of your job description, but it's still embarrassing to watch.
I would not. This place has gotten terrible for sellers, and unsustainable for profit and growth.
I WOULD NOT!
Several reasons. unreasonable fees. Lost shipments. and more.
But the main reason is how seller support is not supportive at all. Especially for issues we did not create.
If I would had know the lack of seller support, I would never had bothered. As of now, I already invested too much money, tears, sweat, and blood to walk away....
Simple example: A lot of our GS1 barcodes cannot be used for new products because it is already used on Amazon for a dead unrelated ASIN that is in some deep dark bottomless pit.
When I open a case, I attached our our GS1 certificate, our cooperate certificate, and our USTPO certificate. The reply is to provide our GS1 certificate, and proof that we are the entity on it by providing an entity certificate like an LLC or cooperate papers and/or a trademark certificate...
Which we do again....
...Only to be replied to provide our GS1 certificate, and proof that we are the entity on it by providing an entity certificate like an LLC or cooperate papers and/or a trademark certificate.
This usually happens 3 times when the case is finally moved up to the right department.
After a month we are told that we were granted an "exemption" and we can use the UPC code that we paid for and is assigned to us.
But this issue keeps coming up with the same prefix. Amazon does not seem to be able to clear the prefix.
It is disheartening when your case is answered by a half trained, half crazed bot that keeps asking for what you had already submitted, several times.
Okay. Forget about feelings. Business is not supposed to be touchy sensitivyee.
But who has time for this? We have orders to pack and ship. We have work to do.
The same when our then best selling item got hijacked. Took two weeks and a lot of time to resolve.
We are here for a long time. We do not recommend this mostly authoritarian site. Start somewhere else. Amazon can crush you in a second.
I have strongly advised new sellers to avoid Amazon for more than a decade; recommending that they get experience elsewhere before attempting to sell on this unforgiving, punitive site.
I now simply tell them my recent experiences with being forced into programs that I do not want and are bad for my business, show them the badly designed and time consuming product and information pages, show them how hard it it is to even find books on the nightmare drop-down mess that the unfortunate buyers need to use and generally show them how offering excellent service is not rewarded, but any tiny infraction is punished. Most move on to more rewarding sites.
Josh,
Amazon has failed the sellers... so fast. We used to sell nearly 200k a year and now it's less than 50k. WHY? We have no rights as a seller. The customers are fraudulent, and Amazon lets them be. We absorb all costs when someone returns, + we have to pay Amazon extra fees for them returning (listed as other/other in our fee reports). We are expected to pay all shipping costs to and from and we can not keep any money to cover expenses. SO, that means prices have to be raised to cover these expenses. Meaning there are NO BARGAINS on Amazon. The only sellers that can keep items at cheaper prices and offer free shipping are the sellers based overseas. Yes, they have made similar items and sell them for less than we can even get raw materials for!
Amazon has an unfriendly seller platform now. We can not edit our products and pictures. After months of fighting for our unique made items that are exclusively designed and made by us, Amazon tells us we can not edit because others' are selling on the listing. That is false. No one else on Amazon sells what we make, or we would be wholesaling to them and we are not.
Amazon used to show our items in a catalog fairly. Now, most items are hidden. We only sell a select few items which is why sales are down. This was due to platform changes. As much as we try to create new listings for these items, using better pictures etc. Amazon changes categories or hides them. I understand model railroad may not be important to Amazon, but our other 6 online stores seem to love these products and we sell 10/1.
Amazon should not be reaping benefits of label printing either. We have to pay full USPS and UPS charges, but Amazon only pays the shippers pennies on the dollar for bulk printed labels. NOW, they entice sellers to print labels through Amazon because supposedly printed labels are backup with guarantees, but they are not guaranteed If I print from Stamps or ShipStation, etc.
These Amazon's changes in the past 15 years that we have been selling here are what's causing the small businesses to fail and big businesses to thrive.
Amazon.. all we ask is to be fair to sellers and let us run our businesses the way we used to. Make an item, sell an item, pay fair fees for selling, ship at a fair price, and have a say in how returns are handled! Isn't that simple??
MrTrain
Because through illegal and immoral actions, they have bullied their way into becoming a de facto monopoly, and sellers have no other choice?
And W*F would we invite more competition: "assist current sellers in articulating the benefits to others"? Plus, I don't speak Chinese, so I can't help the sellers you want to really onboard, you know, the ones with a cultural lack of comprehension of IP laws and rule of law?
And how about instead of "shaping the perception of Amazon" Amazon focuses on shaping the quality of Amazon? Or at least stop telling us you love us while kicking us in the n*rds repeatedly.
Man, you folks have some extreme self-satisfaction and gall over there.
That you could ask that question after seeing all the comments and complaints sellers have had over the past two years makes me think that this 'survey' is calculated to provide Amazon employees a good laugh during their coffee breaks. How many complaints have you read about sales dropping from 50%-90% for booksellers? What has been done? NOTHING. Bye.
Oh, and here's another JOY of selling on Amazon. I just get a RETURN AUTHORIZATION NOTICE. BETTER PRICE AVAILABLE. After the buyer kept the book for 32 days!!! NO WHERE ELSE BUT AMAZON. F-off.
Sellers' perspectives on anything are of "value" to Amazon only as far as they benefit Amazon itself.
This is just Amazon gathering fodder for its PR machine which is always looking for fresh souls. A free focus group.
Even if I could think of something positive - however small - to say about Amazon to help recruit new sellers, my conscience would stop me from engaging.

This is just Amazon gathering fodder for its PR machine which is always looking for fresh souls. A free focus group.
Even if I could think of something positive - however small - to say about Amazon to help recruit new sellers, my conscience would stop me from engaging.
