Changes to review sharing across product variations starting Feb 12

Starting February 12, 2026, we're changing how reviews are shared across products in a variation to improve accuracy and help customers make more informed purchasing decisions. This change will help customers understand product-specific feedback before purchase, increasing trust and potentially decreasing returns.

Currently, reviews are shared across all variations of a product, even when variations have significant differences in features or specifications. This can lead to reviews that don’t accurately reflect the specific variation a customer is considering.

With this change, reviews will only be shared between variations with minor differences that don’t affect functionality. Reviews will no longer appear on variations with significant differences which may affect your products’ overall star ratings and review counts.

Reviews will continue to be shared for the following variations:

  • Color or pattern variations of the same product.
  • Size variations that maintain the same function, like king-sized and queen-sized bedding.
  • Pack size or quantity variations.
  • Secondary scent variations for non-scent-focused products, like lemon-scented vs. unscented cleaning products.
  • Different model fitments for the same product type, like phone cases for different models.

We recognize the importance of reviews to your business. To ensure a smooth transition for both you and your customers, we'll implement these changes gradually by product category between February 12, 2026, and May 31, 2026. You'll receive email notification 30 days before any changes affect your products.

To prepare, we recommend that you review your variations in Manage All Inventory to ensure that they accurately reflect product differences (for example, use color variation for color differences, not quantity variation). For guidance on listing variations and product information, visit Listing quality and Variation relationships.

If you need to update your variation themes after the change takes effect, reviews will be re-shared for eligible products.

For more information about review sharing across variations, visit Review sharing guidelines.

What exactly does the following statement mean, it's not clear?

"Reviews will no longer appear on variations with significant differences which may affect your products’ overall star ratings and review counts."

Does this mean that a review wouldn't appear on the specific variation either or does it mean it just won't be shared across all the variations?

If there are no reviews even for the specific variations, that means a seller is penalized in the algorithm for minimal reviews even though a specific variation might be a top seller and receive many reviews and receive less exposure on Amazon. Is this just another way to increase advertising spend, where we'll have to advertise to try to get the exposure? If, reviews will not be shown, wouldn't this also be considered review suppression and subject to FTC regulations?

Reading through the review sharing guidelines this isn't very clear on what will be impacted and even has some direct contradictions.

On the reviews sharing guidelines page it states:

"Examples of when reviews will be shared across variations: Flavor, Ingredients, or Formulation: Different taste or composition in food, drinks, or supplements (like protein shakes in chocolate vs vanilla or pet food with chicken vs salmon)."

But if you continue reading, in the section that states:

"See the following examples of products in a variation and whether they’re eligible for review sharing: Chocolate protein powder vs Vanilla Protein Powder | Eligible for review sharing: NO | Explanation: Flavor directly impacts customers experience and satisfaction; reviews for one flavor can't represent the other"

I work with a lot of CPG brands so Flavor variations are probably the most common theme that I utilize. So if I could please get some clarity on this it would be great.

Hi @Dougal_Amazon,

I have a complicated one I really hope you can help clarify because it will impact our strategy launching new products going forward.

How does this affect the Vine reviews that were removed when multiple flavors were combined into a variation?

We had 5 flavors of a newly launched product that we enrolled in the top tier of Vine (30 reviews). The plan was to then variate them together for the variation family to have 150 reviews. Then, in April 2025 Amazon "clarified" the policy so combining the child ASINs into a family would only result in 30 reviews with the other 120 being removed/suppressed/deleted (despite paying for them).

We still made the variation because it's a better consumer experience resulting in a number of reviews from each flavor combining to only 30 reviews.

With todays news, starting in February will each of my child ASIN flavors only show the X amount of the 30 shared vine reviews or will all 30 Vine reviews we paid for for each flavor be returned?

The "Review sharing guidelines" provided inherently contradicts itself many times of when reviews will vs will not be shared. Additionally, this do not align w/ the VALID variation themes by product type.

When do you anticipate providing information that is consistent information and aligns with valid variation themes?

Thank you for the update.

Today, January 7, I noticed that 12 reviews suddenly disappeared from my parent ASIN. This happened before February 12 and without any prior notification.

It seems possible that testing or early rollout has already started for some categories. I have contacted Seller Support to request clarification and restoration of the reviews. I hope the reviews will be restored quickly if this was applied prematurely.

Appreciate any clarification from the Amazon team.
