Product Image Aspect Ratio - white side bars
Amazon image guidelines indicate product images should be at least 500 px on the shortest side and at least 1000 px on the longest side. No aspect ratio is given.
Conventional wisdom online suggests a 1:1 square ratio with 2000 px on a side which is what I've been using for my listings. However, I've noticed on desktop, looking at search results or category rank pages, ALL the product images for my competitors' have a 3:2 aspect ratio whereas there are white bars on either side of my images making them look small. And the images on my competitors' product listings also have the 3:2 aspect ratio. These same images appear to be square on mobile.
Is 3:2 the preferred product image aspect ratio? Is this new or have my images always looked shrunk down with the white side bars?

Hi @Seller_KORq6325Mfo7c,
Thanks for posting on Forums! Amazon does not mandate a specific aspect ratio like 3:2 for product images. However, we do have size and display requirements that affect how your images appear:
- Recommended dimensions: 1,000 pixels or larger on either height or width (this enables the zoom function)
- Minimum dimensions: 500 pixels on the longest side
- MAIN image requirement: Product must fill at least 85% of the image frame
- Background: Pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) for MAIN images
The white sidebars you're noticing are likely appearing because:
- Your images may have a different aspect ratio than the display container on the product detail page
- Amazon's system automatically adds white padding to maintain the image's original proportions without distortion
- This is standard behavior and has been consistent over time—not a new change
Please take a look at this link for image requirements
Thanks!
