Read onlyHi there,
I am selling an unopened "collector's item" book in original packaging. Nervous about someone buying this, opening it, then returning. I will never be able to sell it again in that condition. Or even returning it and there now showing wear/tear to the packaging.
Is it best not to sell on Amazon, or is there a way to ensure no returns or limit my risk?
Thanks

BINGO has been called.
Your return policy on Amazon has to be at least as favorable as theirs. That means returns are allowed for ANY reason within 30 days of receipt (longer if BUYER Support says so).
"I finished the book and didn't like the ending."
"My cat tore up all the pages".
"My 3 year old used it for practicing their coloring."
Sell on eBay where YOU can control your sales policies AND have much better protection against all the scammers and con artists that lurk here searching for new sellers. Since you only have one post I have to guess that you are a rookie (raw meat for the thieves).
I have a factory sealed OOP title with a signed bookplate by a top author .. I would not sell it here .. I sell these sealed titles @ the Bay where I do not offer returns but do offer numerous pictures with accurate descriptions.
Completely separate but unique to this selling site for me this year (3 x now since I reactivated in January) .. 3 sales of this same top selling author's (non sealed) titles that I do sell here (all are in the $100 to $250 pricing OOP & hand signed) .. have been left at the Post Office by the entity who "purchased". Delivery at address provided by Amazon had "no authorized recipient".
With "rare OOP/signed" copies I note in the description that X title is shipped via USPS Priority Mail with actual insurance and in person signature confirmation. Not sure if this is something new to me or just something i'd managed to avoid over the years till now. Not sure why anyone would order a $100+ OOP book and then just leave it sitting at the Post Office for weeks on end.
The seller on Amazon undertakes all the risk .. best wishes .. KJ @Seller_ITSm6TMeixAhB
My understanding is that "no return" on Amazon means that the buyer does not have to send it back to get a refund.
I should have added in my original post .. trust your instincts .. you can also direct this "buyer" via Amazon messaging .. to check out the competition's pricing/condition (I do this all the time when I get an "overpriced" request") .. I direct them to the bookfinderdotcom site .. last "buyer" who wanted me to "reduce" my $200 price discovered the only others selling X title were @ $1000 and above .. Amazingly they did buy from me and have not returned said title .. KJ @Seller_ITSm6TMeixAhB
That is always a possibility on Amazon.
The ONLY "Protection" that Amazon provides the Seller in these situations is to file a Safe-T Claim "if the item is Returned in Materially Different Condition than as Originally Shipped".
However, MY experience is that Amaozn considers MOST "Damaged" items to STILL be Re-Sellable, and so only offers a tiny fraction of the original Sale amount in the Safe-T Claim decision.
That being said, I am unaware of ANY online Selling Platform that will allow what you want.
Even EBAY supervisor-Level told me that IF a Buyer complains LOUD enough and LONG enough, EBAY will ALWAYS side with the Buyer over the Seller.
Honestly, the ONLY place your could Sell that Book and enforce a "No Return/No Refund" Policy would be a a Live Event, a Comic-Con, Book Fair, Flea Market, etc.
If you really think it is Valuable, perhaps you would do better with s National Auction house, like Sotheby's, Heritage or similar.
A Sincere Good Luck to you!
Oooops!
That was the classic "Putting the Cart BEFORE the Horse".
RED FLAG ALERT!
The Price of a DESIRED item, like a Book, is whatever the Market will bear. If they do not think it is worth that price, why did they order it?
A Cancellation will only affect your metrics for one week.
IF you really don;t want to spend the rest of your life regretting Selling this IF it does not go as you hope it will, I think it is better to Cancel.
Be aware that a Buyer can leave Negative Feedback for a Cancelled order as well, and that will NEVER go away.
Your choice.
