What does it say when you look at your "Store Status"?

If it says "Active" then you should be OK (but on Amazon anything is possible).

Make sure you have your product paperwork in place for each listing before you create it, that is the #1 thing that causes issue with new sellers. Having an LOA from the brand or brand registry completed along with invoices from an authorized distributor. All compliance documentation, legal paperwork, and ingredient lists.

Sounds like you need to pause and go through Seller University and educate yourself on the platform and how it works.

Getting your shop ready to sell is exciting, and I want to make sure you're set up for success from day one. Below is a complete checklist of everything you need to verify and do before you start adding products and making sales.

Step 1: Verify Your Account Is Fully Active

Before anything else, make sure your Seller Central account has no outstanding issues:

  • Log in to Seller Central → Go to Settings → Account Info
  • Check that all sections show a green checkmark or "Verified" status:

✅ Business Information — Your legal name, address, and business type are confirmed

✅ Identity Verification — Your government-issued ID and any required documents have been accepted

✅ Bank Account (Deposit Method) — A valid bank account is linked for receiving payments. Go to Settings → Account Info → Deposit Methods to confirm

✅ Charge Method (Credit Card) — A valid credit card is on file for Amazon to charge selling fees. Go to Settings → Account Info → Charge Methods to verify

✅ Tax Information — Your tax interview (W-9 for US sellers) is complete. Go to Settings → Account Info → Tax Information

⚠️ Important: If any of these show as incomplete, pending, or have a warning banner at the top of Seller Central, you'll need to resolve those first. Amazon may restrict your ability to list products or receive payments until all verification steps are complete.

Step 2: Understand Your Selling Plan

You're on one of two plans — make sure you know which one:

  • Individual Plan — $0.99 per item sold. Best if you plan to sell fewer than 40 items/month. You list products one at a time and have access to basic tools.
  • Professional Plan — $39.99/month (no per-item fee). Best if you plan to sell more than 40 items/month. Gives you access to bulk listing tools, advertising (Sponsored Products), promotions, detailed reports, and eligibility for the Buy Box.

To check your plan: Go to Settings → Account Info → Your Services → Manage (under "Selling on Amazon").

💡 Tip: If you're serious about building a business, the Professional plan is almost always worth it — even from the start. You'll need it for advertising, promotions, and many growth tools.

Step 3: Get Your Product Information Ready

Before you create your first listing, gather the following for each product:

  • Product Name/Title — Clear, descriptive, and keyword-rich
  • Product ID (UPC/EAN/GTIN) — Most categories require a valid barcode. You can purchase UPCs from GS1 (gs1.org). If your product is handmade or private label without a barcode, you can apply for a GTIN Exemption in Seller Central
  • Brand Name — The brand of the product you're selling
  • Product Description — A paragraph overview of your product and its benefits
  • Bullet Points — Up to 5 key features/benefits
  • Product Images — Minimum of 1 main image (white background, 1600px+ recommended), but aim for 5–7 images showing different angles, lifestyle use, size reference, etc.
  • Price — Your selling price
  • Quantity — How many units you have available
  • SKU — Your own internal identifier for the product (you create this)
  • Search Terms/Keywords — Relevant words customers might use to find your product

Step 4: Create Your First Product Listing

Once your info is ready:

  • In Seller Central, go to Catalog → Add Products
  • Search for your product using the UPC/barcode or product name
  • If the product already exists on Amazon → You can match your offer to the existing listing (just set your price, condition, quantity, and fulfillment method)
  • If the product is new to Amazon → Click "Create a new listing" and fill out all the required fields

Fill out each tab:

  • Product Identity — Name, type, brand
  • Product Description — Description, bullet points, images
  • Offer — Price, quantity, condition (New/Used), and fulfillment method (FBA or Fulfilled by Merchant)
  • Safety & Compliance — Any applicable safety or hazmat information
  • Click Submit (or Save as Draft if you want to come back later)

💡 Pro Tip: Amazon now offers AI-powered listing tools that can help you generate titles, descriptions, and bullet points from just a few keywords or an image. Look for the "Generate" option when creating your listing.

Step 5: Choose Your Fulfillment Method

You have two main options:

  • Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) — You send your inventory to Amazon's warehouses. Amazon handles storage, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. Your products become Prime-eligible. This is the most popular option for new sellers.
  • Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) — You store, pack, and ship products yourself. You handle customer service and returns. Good if you have your own warehouse or want more control.

If you choose FBA:

  • Go to Inventory → Manage FBA Inventory
  • Create a shipping plan to send your products to Amazon's fulfillment centers
  • Label your products (Amazon can do this for a small fee)
  • Ship your inventory to the designated warehouse(s)

Step 6: Check for Category Restrictions

Some categories and brands require approval before you can list. Common restricted categories include:

  • Grocery & Gourmet Food
  • Jewelry
  • Watches
  • Automotive
  • Collectible Coins
  • Fine Art
  • Some subcategories in Beauty, Health, and Toys

To check: Try adding a product in the category you want to sell in. If approval is required, Seller Central will prompt you with a "Request Approval" button and tell you what documents are needed (usually invoices from a manufacturer or distributor).

Common New Seller Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Don't skip product images — Listings without good images get almost no clicks

❌ Don't price without calculating fees — Use the Revenue Calculator to understand referral fees, FBA fees, and your actual profit margin

❌ Don't ignore the "Account Health" dashboard — This is where Amazon flags any policy issues. Check it regularly

❌ Don't create duplicate listings — Always search for your product first. If it already exists on Amazon, match your offer to the existing page

❌ Don't use fake or purchased UPCs — Only use legitimate UPCs from GS1. Using invalid barcodes can get your listing removed or account suspended

You're closer than you think to making your first sale! Take it one step at a time, and don't hesitate to come back to the forums if you run into any specific issues along the way. The seller community here is incredibly helpful.
