How to Sell on Amazon 100 – A Learning Journey! Listing Creation 101📋

Hi Sellers! 👋

Whether you just opened your store or you're still fine-tuning your first products, creating a strong listing is one of the most impactful things you can do to drive sales. Think of your product listing as your digital storefront — it's the first impression customers get, and it directly affects whether they click "Add to Cart."

We've put together this guide covering the essentials of listing creation so you can set yourself up for success from day one.

For this event, we also invited our experienced sellers to provide you with real, actionable insights. Meet our experienced sellers:

Seller @Seller_0EiTWTPC4Lbig “My name is Brad, and I've been building and selling brands on Amazon for more than 18 years. I've optimized hundreds of listing pages and tested what drives better rankings, higher conversion, and stronger customer trust. I look forward to sharing practical, experience-based advice to help other sellers improve their listings.”

Seller @Seller_nhs8F6N8mI3wI “Hello, my name is Steve and I have been selling on Amazon since 2017. I sell FBA almost exclusively. When I get the opportunity to sell FBM, I make SURE the customer receives the best support possible, including sending free items and a hand-written note from me. Always remember, without raging fans for your items, you are just “one of those people”. Happy selling!

Seller @Seller_NAQxAF9DhFEwN “Hi, I'm Dr. Susan Claiborne —an Amazon seller, entrepreneur, and former business professor with a passion for e-commerce and helping others succeed. As the founder of a small women-owned business I use both wholesale, authorized seller, and private label strategies to sell wellness, beauty, and household products. I enjoy sharing practical tips, lessons learned, and encouragement with new sellers as they navigate Amazon. I believe there's always something new to learn, and I'm happy to help others grow as we all travel this journey.

1. Optimizing Your Titles, Bullet Points, Images, and Descriptions

Your listing's core elements work together to convert browsers into buyers. Here's what to focus on:

  • Titles: Keep them at or under 75 characters. Use the Product title requirements and guidelines for help
  • Bullet Points: You get up to 5 — use them all. Start each with a capital letter, highlight a unique benefit, and keep them scannable. Avoid promotional language or pricing.
  • Images: Your main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling at least 85% of the frame. Use a minimum of 1000 pixels to enable zoom. Add lifestyle images and infographics in your secondary slots.
  • Descriptions: Use up to 2,000 characters to describe features, usage, and what makes your product stand out. Avoid seller-specific info or promotional claims.

📚 Seller University Resources:

2. Understanding Keywords and Search Relevance

Keywords are how customers find your products. Amazon's search engine matches customer queries to the words in your listing — so choosing the right terms is critical.

  • Add relevant search terms in the Keywords tab (250 bytes max)
  • Use synonyms, abbreviations, and alternate names
  • Separate words with spaces — no punctuation needed
  • Don't repeat words already in your title or brand name
  • Skip subjective claims like "best" or "amazing"
  • Use singular OR plural — no need for both

Pro Tip: Research what top sellers in your category include in their titles and bullet points for keyword inspiration.

📚 Seller University Resources:

3. Common Listing Mistakes New Sellers Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Here are the pitfalls we see most often:

  • ❌ Missing or low-quality images → Invest in professional photos that meet Amazon's requirements
  •  Keyword stuffing in titles → Write for humans first, then optimize for search
  • ❌ Incomplete product information → Fill out every relevant attribute to avoid suppression
  •  Ignoring category Style Guides → Each category has specific title formats and requirements
  • ❌ Creating duplicate SKUs for the same ASIN → Keep your inventory clean with one SKU per product per fulfillment method

If your listing becomes inactive or suppressed, don't panic — Amazon provides tools to identify and fix the issue quickly.

Hello! My name is Steve Jackson, and I am here to help with any questions you may have about selling on Amazon. I have pretty much seen it all, and I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I had when I started selling on Amazon. My first tip is this: "Want to go fast? Slow down." When you hit a roadblock, ask for help from Amazon or the community before proceeding. It WILL save you time and unnecessary effort.

Happy selling!

A very well put together and organized post by @Dougal_Amazon.

What Amazon and no one else will tell new sellers are the three most important words in all retail sales. They come before everything else, because everything else is based on them. Those three words are product, Product and PRODUCT.

When you sell products that consumers want and need, and offer them at the lowest price, they sell themselves with little assistance. When you sell a dead or slow-moving product, it is a long and hard uphill battle often needing a lot of assistance from advertising venues.
