UPS Drivers no longer allowed to scan on pick up

We have had a daily UPS pick up for years, which we pay for on a weekly basis. For the better part of 15 + years our drivers have scanned the packages before they left here - EVERY day. We now have UPS no longer allowing drivers to scan although you can pay for the service of scanning or let the packages be scanned when the truck gets to the hub.

What is the recourse when the package doesn't get scanned at the hub? All of a sudden we have been on the hook for at least 10-12 packages that were never scanned but also never received. Amazon is the shipper so UPS won't open a claim and as there was never a scan Amazon won't honor an A-Z and don't dare try as it would be a metrics hit. Perhaps I am just venting but has anyone navigated this issue with any success. We went back to using USPS for a lot of the shipping but now their holiday pricing is in place so it is a lose lose scenario.......

Yes - switch to Fedex. This, from my understanding, is an INTERNAL UPS optional policy that route managers are allowed to enact to save time. I see posts from 2023 when they started doing this.

Tip the driver and ask him to scan the packages.

USPS will delivery slower and later the next few months - and they are bad enough already.

Fedex is also worse than USPS with "adjustments" but at least it would be delivered on time and not lost as often.

I'd call the route manager or your UPS rep and explain that you require and expect the packages to be scanned at pickup.

I had the same problem when a few packages were not scanned at the hub. I called the hub directly and explained my problem. The option to scan is optional, depending on the hub rules and my business was given an exception. Now my packages are scanned at pick up from my warehouse. Call the hub and see if yours can get scanned at pick up.

Do you have a UPS rep? My rep was able to get it added. The Hub fought it, but lost. It shows as required on the POS system when the driver acknowledges the daily pickup. The random drivers dont always want to but seeing its in the POS board you cant prompt them and there isnt much they can say.

Just be on great terms with your UPS driver. I had a wonderful UPS driver who did what we needed no questions asked and we would tip him during the holiday season very well and always asked how his day was, asked him about his family and became friends with him. Now that I work from home, I just run to UPS myself.

We switched to FedEx this summer. It saves us around 15% on shipping spend, and we noticed the drivers actually listen to us.

I would keep on bugging the UPS rep that is assigned to your account, if I were you. If that leads nowhere, then escalate to his territory manager. Insist on the scan at the pickup (threaten to switch to FedEx if they refuse). Hopefully, they will abide.

We don't have a scan at the daily pickup, but we only had one package in the past few years when it was lost between the pickup time and when it was supposed to be scanned at the local hub. It turned out to be our error when we didn't attach the label properly and it got thorn/destroyed. But it made it to the customer quickly: the packing slip inside the box helped. UPS opened the box, found the slip, and created a new overnight label.

Switching to other carrier is not an easy thing. UPS and FedEx might have absolutely different track records in the same area. It might depend on your route too. UPS is fantastic where we are. We have all UPS drivers' cell phones, we treat them well (free soda, available bathroom whenever they need it), and we have a great rapport with all of them. We can easily ask them for a later pickup if we need more time to pack. And they can contact us if they need to get off the route sooner and give us heads up about that.

FedEx here is terrible, on the other hand. We tried. We honestly tried. Our route doesn't have a dedicated driver. Every day we would see a new driver. They would show up too early or too late, stretching the pickup window, and messing up our operations. We often would have to send our own truck to drop off stuff at FedEx Store or at the airport. FedEx store's hours were cut in our area by one hour recently (it used to be 5 pm for Ground and 6 pm for Express, now it's 5 pm for both, and we saw the situations where the drivers would leave even at 4:30-4:45). But FedEx pickup driver would scan everything.

Don't make rush decisions about switching carriers. That requires some research, trial, price negotiations, etc.
