Best Practices for Handmade Images

Are you a visual shopper? When you're going to make an online purchase, do you feel more confident making a decision when there's multiple photos of the product?

We recommend at least 3 to 5 images that feature different angles, and "lifestyle images" (besides your main photo that should be in a pure white background). This will help your customers crave your product to the point where they just have to have it! You’ll also want to make sure your main image is high resolution (1600 pixels on the longest side), which will allow customers to zoom in on the details of your product.

Pro Tip: If you have listings that have been suppressed for not having a white background on your main image and you want to continue selling those items, check out the following app suggestions from other Makers in the Handmade community:

  • Remove bg
  • Adobe Express
  • Canva
  • Clipping Magic
  • Fotofuze

Share below any tips & trips that have worked for you, for any fellow makers that are still getting the hang of it.

Although I use a white background when taking photos, my listings often get suppressed because they are deemed - "We believe the main image has non-pure white background which is not permitted for this product type." I could not figure out why my white background that I use for other sites would not work here.

Today I decided to try a few of the apps listed here. The app that helped me get the background of pure white was Adobe Express.

There was a learning curve with Adobe Express in order get the white background. When I first used the Remove Background tool it gave me a checkered grey and white background. It was a little hard to figure out how to size the picture and get the pure white background but finally after much trial and error I got it to work.

I imagine it will just take a little more practice to be able to post an item faster than a snail's pace.

If any of you are educators (public, private, home school), you qualify for a free premium Canva account through their education program! Their background remover is generally good.

We use pixloom, a paid background removal service online that is reasonably priced and perfect for people like us who have other things to do!
