Read onlyA customer was granted an automatic return authorization for an order under the "Bought by Mistake" option. The return is via UPS and there is a tracking number. That was two weeks ago and the tracking shows that the customer has still not dropped the return off at UPS. I contacted the customer but there was no response at all. Do these authorizations expire? What if the customer just never returns the item?
Yes, they will eventually expire. If the customer never returns the item (which happens more often than you might think), then you do not issue a refund; customer keeps the item, you keep the money, it's as if the refund request never happened.
Therefore, what you do NOT want to do is to contact the customer regarding the status of the return. If they decide to keep it, you win. But same is true if they simply FORGET to return it; it's not up to you to remind them to do something that will cost you money! Just let it sit, and eventually either they will return it (and you refund) or it will expire (and you keep the money).
It takes about 50 days for return requests to expire if they haven't been followed through on.
Yes, a buyer put in a return request in Sept, finally mailed the book back in Dec, over 3 months after receiving it. It was no longer on my seller page, but I refunded him $5 on the $25 book to prevent any claims.
some scammers file the return request as soon as the package hits the post office when you ship it
The few that I have experienced have "expired" (fallen off my Seller Central home page), in about seven weeks. Often to the day. Until then, I just ignore them.
But if you garner nothing else from this thread, listen to this:
Why would you do that?????? Go stand in the corner until you know better. 🤣
