Suffocation warning on paper bags — required or not?
Hello,
I have a packaging compliance question regarding suffocation warning labels for FBA shipments.
Some of our products ship in plain paper bags (no plastic film or window). Do these require a suffocation warning label, or does this requirement only apply to plastic/poly bags?
Additionally, we have a borderline case: one of our products is packaged with an opening of exactly 12.7 cm (5 inches), which is right at the threshold mentioned in the packaging guidelines. Could you confirm whether a suffocation warning is required in this exact-threshold case?

Thank you for your help!

Suffocation warnings are for plastic bags. It starts at 5" so yes, it needs a warning sticker.

The suffocation warning requirement specifically applies to poly bags (plastic bags) per the product packaging requirements. Since your plain paper bags contain no plastic film, no plastic window, and no poly material, they would not fall under the suffocation warning label requirement.
That said, if your paper bags have any plastic component, the requirement would apply. So as long as they are truly 100% paper with no plastic elements, you should be in the clear on the suffocation warning.
Poly bags with a 5-inch opening or larger require a suffocation warning. The threshold language is "5 inches or greater" meaning that an opening of exactly 5 inches (12.7 cm) does meet the threshold and would require a suffocation warning label. When in doubt at the exact boundary, it's always best practice to include the warning to avoid potential non-compliance issues at the fulfillment center.

This is a duplicate post to your post: Poly bag requirement for apparel already packaged in a box — outer box or item itself?
