Size Normalization FAQ

1. At a high level, what has changed?

Amazon standardized ‘Size’ inputs to facilitate a more consistent customer experience for quantity information. Seller contributions containing ‘Size’ would not be visible and instead be derived from other catalog attributes, that is unit_count, number_of_items, net_content_weight, net_content_volume, and net_content_count.

2. Why is it important to follow specified guidelines to display quantity information?

Amazon believes that customers are entitled to be informed of the quantity of product they would receive after purchasing. This is currently displayed via the ‘Size’ attribute. Unintelligible quantity information leads to customer confusion, hence we want to display quantity details in standardized formats. In addition, products with the right quantity information showed an increase in Gross Merchandise Sales compared to the products with ‘Size’ defects. Amazon is committed to helping sellers meet this data quality bar by creating mechanisms which would give information in consistent formats.

3. How does this benefit my business?

Standardized quantity information improves the customer’s shopping discovery and purchasing experience. We found that ASINs with a valid ‘Size’ values displaying quantity information had higher purchases from customers leading to an increase in GMS.

4. What are the customer benefits of standardized quantity information?

Only the ‘Size’ a customer is familiar with based on geographical location will appear in the ‘Size’ value (for example, Customers in the US will be displayed weight information in ‘Ounce’ whereas customers in UK will be displayed weight information in ‘Grams’). When browsing the Amazon store, customers will find the quantity information on the ‘Size’ attribute.

5. What are normalization rules and why do they exist?

Normalization rules automatically reformat ‘Size’ values when possible. To make things easier for sellers, we apply normalization rules to quantity information on ‘Size’ attribute that do not conform to our format standard to disambiguate details for the end customer and eliminate duplicates. For example, if you have previously submitted the value 32 count or 32 Units (1 Pack) to Amazon’s US store, then it has been automatically converted to “32 Count (Pack of 1)”.

6. How will the listing creation experience change?

There is no change to the listing creation experience. However, ensure to add the correct information on attributes below based on which ‘Size’ value will be derived for the relevant PTs:

3. NET_CONTENT (Weight, Volume, Count, Area)

7. When will the visibility of standardized ‘Size’ value go into effect?

The updated Size values will be visible from June 2022 across the following product types shared in FAQ 15 (PT-List). All new ASIN listings and updates on existing ASINs must have the required attributes (as Shared on FAQ 6) for ‘Size’ value to be visible.

8. What will happen to the values that I entered in ’Size’ and variation themes for existing ASINs?

The attribute ’Size’ will remain in the Amazon catalog, but details entered will not be visible on product detail pages. Amazon will automatically combine values from the new attributes to populate the ‘Size’ attribute. After enforcement, there is no change in values for variation themes. There is no need to resubmit ‘Size’ values if the values for existing ASINs in ‘Size’ are valid.

9. What if I use a feeds integrator?

The same standards will apply to the feed ingestion method. Therefore, if you use a feeds integrator, then the integrator will need to conform to the attribute listing standards. Amazon has published these standards approximately 60 days prior to enforcing the new attributes in order to allow sufficient time to adopt the new standards.

10. What if my product ‘Size’ is not an option, or falls under an additional attribute?

Firstly, verify that you have selected accurate values for Unit Count, Number of Items and Net_Content, attributes as these will determine the values available under subsequent attributes. If you feel that you have a valid use-case where your ’Size’ is not an available option, then you can submit a request to Amazon Selling Partner Support. Amazon will review your request.

11. Why is the size displayed on the website different from the ‘Size’ information that I submitted?

To improve the customer experience, Amazon standardizes ‘Sizes’ displayed on our website to eliminate duplicate information, and standardize the way quantity information on sizes is displayed. Having accurate quantity information and a clean detail page helps to build customer confidence and higher sales.

Here is how the ‘Size’ standards work:

If two sellers have listings for the same quantity pack of a product, but each provides a different value on ‘Size’, one being 32 Count and the other 32 Count (1 Pack), then Amazon’s ‘Size’ standardization logic will instead identify the information based on the formula ‘unit_count’/’number_of_items’ + <unit_count.type> + (“Pack of” + number_of_items).

Hence, if Unit Count = 32 Count and Number of Items = 1, Amazon will derive the Size value as 32 Count (Pack of 1). As a result, only one version of the ‘Size’ will be visible to customers, and both the sellers' offers will be associated with the same product.

12. Why is my ‘Size’ hidden from the Detail Page?

In order to improve the customer experience, Amazon retains the right to remove ‘Sizes’ which appear inaccurate or incorrectly formatted. If a ’Size’ does not follow the ‘Size’ standards format, then it will be subject to removal.

13. Should I update the information for all my existing products?

It is required that all SKUs or ASINs be updated with the required attributes for us to improve buyer experience. If you have offers on any ASINs in the below applicable product types, you must update the data by following the instructions in FAQ 14 below. You will be notified to add the missing “Item Form” and “Number of Items” during regular catalog edits (such as pricing updates, updates to product information).

14. How can the sellers update the attributes?

Sellers can edit individual ASINs, or do a BULK upload of revised values through Seller Central. You can find the steps below:

Single ASIN attribute update:

• Navigate to Manage Inventory under the Inventory tab on Seller Central
• Search the ASIN and click Edit
• This will open up a new tab.
• In the Vital Info section, fill unit_count, unit_count_type, and number_of_items
• Save changes.

BULK Upload Process for Attribute Update:

• Navigate to Add products via upload under the Inventory tab on Seller Central
• Download the inventory template titled Inventory files (at the bottom), or generate the required category template
• Download the category specific downloadable file and fill SKU, fill unit_count, unit_count_type, number_of_items, update delete (fill Partial update). Save the file in text tab delimited format
• Navigate to Add products via upload under Inventory, and then upload your inventory file
• Select file type as inventory file (default) and upload.

15. What product types are impacted by this change?

Normalization is in-scope in for PTs across Consumables and Hardlines, but currently it is planned for implementation in 116 PTs, shown in the table below:
