Listing an expiration-dated product

How to list an expiration-dated product

The instructions on this Help page enable you to list an expiration-dated product with the following characteristics:

  1. A printed expiration date
  2. A shelf life
  3. Loss of effectiveness over time

When creating an ASIN for an expiration-dated product, you need to inform Amazon that the product expires, when it expires, and how to handle it at the Fulfillment Center by completing four product attributes: Is Product Expirable, Product Expiration Type, Fulfillment Center Shelf Life, and Fulfillment Center Shelf Life Unit. By providing accurate information for these attributes, you can help Amazon track your product's expiration effectively and prevent expired products from reaching customers. Improper or incomplete answers may not only result in the delivery of expired products to customers, but also to the early disposal or return of your products.

What are the expiration attributes?

1. Is Product Expirable

This attribute allows Amazon to identify whether your product expires or loses effectiveness over time.

What are the available options?

The drop-down field has two permissible values and is mandatory to answer.

  • Yes
  • No

What to choose?

Select "Yes" if the product meets one of the following criteria:

  1. Has a printed expiration/manufacturing date
  2. Is a topical or consumable product for either human or animal use
  3. Has a recommended shelf life
  4. Has a PAO symbol
  5. Loses effectiveness over time
Otherwise, select "No".

Else, select "No".

2. Product Expiration Type

This attribute determines how Amazon will treat your product at its fulfillment centers.

What are the available options?

When you select "Yes" for the Is Product Expirable attribute, the Product Expiration Type attribute offers four options in the drop-down field:

  • Expiration date required
  • Expiration on package
  • Production date required
  • Shelf life

When you select "No" for the Is Product Expirable attribute, the Product Expiration Type attribute offers only one option in the drop-down field:

  • Does Not Expire

What to choose?

  • Select "Expiration Date Required" when the expiration date is printed on the product packaging.
  • Select "Expiration on Package" when you want the product to be reviewed for an expiration date at inbound[HU1]
    • Select "Production Date Required" when the production or manufacturing date is printed on product packaging
    • Select "Shelf Life" when the product will lose effectiveness over time but does not have an exact expiration date or production date. For example, batteries & certain beauty supplies.
    • Select the "Does Not Expire" which is the only option available if you have selected "No" for the "Is Product Expirable" attribute.

3. Fulfillment Center Shelf Life

This attribute specifies the duration your product can be kept on a shelf in an Amazon fulfillment center without losing effectiveness. In other words, it tells us how many days the product can be stored before becoming unfit for sale.

What are the available options?

Enter any value between 0 and 1825 in days. It is mandatory to answer if you select Yes for the "Is Product Expirable" attribute. To learn more about the shelf life requirements for your product, go to Expiration dates on FBA products.

What to provide?

Convert the duration that your product can be on a shelf without losing effectiveness into days and enter that value into the text field. The maximum value allowed for this field is 1825 days.

Examples:

  • Your product has no printed dates, but you know that it will lose effectiveness in 36 months. The shelf life value will be 36 months * 30 days per month, which is 1080 days.
  • The production date is January 1, 2021, and the expiration date is December 31, 2021. The shelf life value is the difference between the production date and expiration date, which is 365 days.
  • The manufacturing date is January 1, 2021, and best before 24 months. The shelf life will be 24 months * 30 days per month, which is 730 days.
  • The expiration date is January 1, 2022, and your product will reach Amazon (ship date) on March 1, 2021. The shelf life value will be the difference between the ship date and expiration date, which is 270 days.

4. Fulfillment Center Shelf Life Unit

This attribute specifies the unit of measurement for the fulfillment center shelf life.

What are the available options?

The drop-down field has one permissible value, days. It is mandatory to answer when you have provided the "Fulfillment Center Shelf Life" attribute.

What to choose?

Select Days.

Note: It is mandatory to provide accurate information for the expiration attributes. Inaccurate information may result in early disposal or return of items to you. To ensure data accuracy, Amazon may periodically audit and correct the expiry attributes.
