Mountaineering helmets covered by this policy
A mountaineering helmet is intended to protect the user against head injuries that could occur while climbing. There are two types of climbing helmets that can be used for mountaineering: hard-shell helmets and shelled foam helmets.
Helmets that are intended for use while working on trees, also known as arborist helmets, are not included in this policy.
Hard-shell helmets
Hard-shell helmets (also known as suspension helmets or hybrid helmets) are similar to a traditional lid, but have an extra-hard outer shell, typically made of ABS plastic, paired with a strap suspension system and a thin foam liner.
Shelled foam helmets
Shelled foam helmets are lightweight and have a thick layer of impact-absorbing foam, typically polystyrene or polypropylene that is protected by a thin polycarbonate shell. This type of helmet is intended to dissipate impact forces through deformation.
