Books ISBN Requirements – FAQs

You must provide an ISBN, JAN, or EAN (ISBN-13s) to list a book in the Amazon catalog, regardless of the book's publication date. To list books that do not have an ISBN, JAN, or EAN, you can request an exemption.

Which seller tools will require ISBNs?

The ISBN requirement (and exemptions) will impact sellers using Amazon’s Book Loader, and includes both Standard Book Loader and UIEE files.

To add ISBN/EAN data to Book Loader files:

  • If you use the Standard Book Format, enter your ISBN/EAN in the "product-id" field.
  • If you use UIEE files, enter your ISBN/EAN in the "NT" field in the first 200 characters.

What if I don’t have an ISBN?

To create an offer for a book that does not have an ISBN, JAN, or EAN, you can request an exemption from the requirement.

Do I have to get an exemption for every book I want to list that doesn’t have an ISBN?

If you list books that already exist in the Amazon catalog, no exemption is required. You would add them as a contribution to the existing listing on Amazon. If your books are not available in the Amazon catalog, you can request an exemption by following the instructions on Books ISBN Requirements and Exemptions.

Will this change impact my current listings?

If you remove book listings that you created before June 1, 2017, from your inventory, you will need an ISBN, EAN, or JAN to relist them in the future.
