Use Add a Product to create variations

Add a Product offers the option to create variations, using a web-based interface. See About parent-child relationships to understand how product variations work on Amazon.

Note: You might also want to review the help information for the Add a Product tool. Before you begin the listing process, determine if your products fulfill the requirements to be listed as variations. See Determine variations for your products for more information.

Before you list a product variation, check whether the variation of the product exists in the Amazon catalog. To do this, click on Add a Product under Inventory drop-down, and search for the product variation you wish to sell. Results are more accurate if you search with product identifiers (UPC, EAN, JAN, or ISBN). Based on the search results, following are the two ways you can use to Add a Product to create variations:

  • Match to an existing variation listing: If you locate the variation listing corresponding to the product you want to list, you can match to this existing variation listing
  • Create a new variation listing: If you are unable to locate the variation listing, you can create a new variation.

Match to an existing variation listing

Follow these steps to match to an existing variation listing:
  1. After locating the variation listing you want to sell, click on Show variations. This will expand the list of all variations currently present on Amazon catalog.
  2. Using the Select a condition drop down, choose the condition you would like to sell the product.
  3. On selecting the condition, the Sell this variation button becomes active. Click Sell this variation button to select the variation.
  4. Enter your offer details.
  5. Click on Save.

Create a new variation listing

Follow these steps to create a new variation listing:
  1. Select Add a Product from Inventory drop-down.
  2. Click on I’m adding a product not sold on Amazon.
  3. Search or browse for the category that matches the product you want to sell and click the Select category button.
  4. On the Vital info tab, complete the required fields (marked with an asterisk *), and click on Continue.
  5. In the next tab of Variations, select a theme from the Variation Theme drop-down list.
  6. Select the appropriate variation theme that you think is relevant for the products you are listing.
Note: The Variation Theme drop-down list and Variations tab will appear only if you are selling in a product category that supports variations. Once you have created a product with a selected variation theme, you will not be able to change the variation theme.
  7. You will be prompted to enter values for the chosen variation theme. For example, if the variation theme selected is color, you can enter values like red, blue, white, etc.
  8. Click on Generate variations. A Variations Matrix appears, allowing you to add more detail for each variation combination.
    • A product identifier (EAN or UPC) is required for each variation.
    • While not required, a seller SKU will be automatically generated for you if you do not add one.
    • Provide all offer details for each product such as, condition, price, and quantity.
    • To delete variations, check the box corresponding to the listing and click on Delete Selection.
  9. On adding the possible variations, click Continue
  10. In the remaining tabs add images, product description, keywords, and other product attributes. This information will appear in all variations of the product you want to sell. You can edit product information at any time on the Manage Inventory page.
Note: Follow the recommendations in the Product page style guides for each child product.
