Calculating the outbound shipping weight

Standard-size and special oversize

The outbound shipping weight is calculated for each individual unit by adding the packaging weight to the unit weight. The total for each unit is rounded up to the nearest pound. The outbound shipping weight is then used to calculate the fulfillment fee based on the rates listed above.

Large standard-size items weighing more than 1 lb., small oversize, medium oversize, and large oversize

The outbound shipping weight is calculated for each individual unit by adding the packaging weight to the greater of the unit weight or the dimensional weight. The total for each unit is rounded up to the nearest pound. The outbound shipping weight is then used to calculate the fulfillment fee based on the rates listed above.

Product size tier and category Packaging weight Outbound shipping weight
Standard-size media (1 lb. or less) 4 oz (0.25 lb.) Unit weight 1 + packaging weight 2 (total rounded up to the nearest whole pound)
Standard-size media (more than 1 lb.) 4 oz (0.25 lb.) The greater of the unit weight 1 or dimensional weight 3 + packaging weight 2 (total rounded up to the nearest whole pound)
Oversize media and non-media 16 oz (1.00 lb.) The greater of the unit weight 1 or dimensional weight 3 + packaging weight 2 (total rounded up to the nearest whole pound)
Special oversize 16 oz (1.00 lb.) Unit weight 1 + packaging weight 2 (total rounded up to the nearest whole pound)
Note: Unit weights, dimensions, and other measures used to calculate fees are as determined by Amazon and are subject to variations based on packaging. Dimensions may change based on packaging type.

1The unit weight is the weight of an individual unit.

2The packaging weight is the weight of the box and packing materials. Amazon uses these standardized weights for the purpose of calculating outbound shipping weight.

3The dimensional weight is the unit volume (based on length x width x height in inches) divided by 139. For large standard-size units weighing more than 1 lb. and all small oversize, medium oversize, and large oversize units, we use dimensional weight when the dimensional weight is greater than the unit weight.
