EDIT:
Speedybarcodes is not a scam, they took care of my issue remarkably well actually and went extra mile multiple times.
They are preparing the package now which I will be able to show amazon as a proof of ownership for their barcodes
and hopefully they can ban that fraudulent seller and free up my barcodes in their database.
Of course they were registered to another company. If they weren’t speedy would not have them. GS1 does not subcontract the sales of barcodes.
Many of these 3P barcodes are registered to companies no longer in business.
It is likely that some other outfit is also selling these identical codes too, it is not like the company they are registered to will complain.
You gotta buy them from GS1.
From my memory, it’s $750 to register your company, and $150/year for every 100 UPS’s.
GS1 is very expansive. In my opinion this so called non profit organization are practicing highway robbery. They only do so because they can, since they are the recognized clearinghouse for this.
Yet I purchase my UPC codes directly from them. For now I only have 8 products. But I keep adding and soon I will have to update to the next level.
Your situation is precisely why. I want to be able to sleep at night. I am building a brand and don’t want trouble down the line when a product is moving along nicely.
I keep writing this in the forums. Yet in the old forums I had a lot of no votes for this. Wonder why.
I Kid You Not_Sorry
It isn’t a scam. You don’t understand the situation with GS1 barcodes, the legal history. “Reseller UPCs” are valid UPC codes that can be legally resold. Amazon is under no obligation to honor them.
Up to a point in time GS1 (formerly UCC) sold UPCs in LARGE blocks, as in 100,000’s, and the purchaser owned the rights to use them in perpetuity. GS1 then changed policy. As in UPCs will now need to be “renewed” yearly, as in you are now leasing the number on a yearly schedule.
Naturally the prior purchasers of UPC codes sued the crap out of GS1, and the settlement is that those customers continue to own their UPCs, and can use them without yearly fees, and can resell them if they wish as well. That said GS1 does not update the registration for these UPCs. They remain under the original purchasers name in the GS1 registration database. This may or may not cause you problems with retailers like Amazon.
Amazon is under no obligation to accept resold UPCs. That said I have used these UPCs on Amazon in the past without problem for my own products. Someone else was able to use yours on Amazon.
You have no idea if Speedy resold the codes, or if someone else just took the liberty of using them first on Amazon without having bought them (such as using a keygen for UPCs).
