Ive not used them on Amazon, but on my own site.

We see 2 kinds of use with them. Either they get people complaining that ordered things the day before , or people just google your name and coupon code and look for a discount. We used to run promotions with forums and clubs, each would get their own codes so we could track where our advertising efforts were best being used, but with those code plugins like Honey, its made them useless.

Im also wary about using discounts on some items now because Ive had warranty claims get denied because of using a coupon code when ordering through Amazon (IIRC, this was with Ryobi?)
