"Amazon sign-in code" email

by Seller_ATJxcmyKzHVAt

I just got an email with subject “Amazon sign-in code” from account-update@amazon.com. Email reads:

Your sign-in code is:

######(code)

Amazon takes your account security very seriously. Amazon will never email you and ask you to disclose or verify your Amazon password, credit card, or banking account number. If you receive a suspicious email with a link to update your account information, do not click on the link—instead, report the email to Amazon for investigation.

We hope to see you again soon.

However, I have NOT updated any of my Amazon settings. I’ve had 2-step verification enabled since it first became available and never had any problems with my login. In addition, I have up-to-date anti-malware and anti-virus installed in the 2 computers that I use to access my account, and I perform full scans every 2 weeks, in addition to the real-time protection. I just scanned both and they came out completely clean.

I checked my bank account and credit card and they’re unchanged. Should I be worried?

Got the same email yesterday. Hopefully a glitch. We normally only receive a text message and no email.

It happened to me, as well.

Worried, NO. Concerned, YES. Aware, YES.

What has likely happened is that someone used your email address on Amazon.com to initiate the process to update the password. However, since you have the Two-Step verified, that message was sent.

Just to safe, I changed my password. You might also consider changing your email address and that will stop this immediately.

Exactly my thoughts, Dave. I was just on the phone with an account specialist and they verified that everything looked fine. This has happened to me too with other services (social media, email) in the last months, but those attempts went nowhere thanks to the 2SV. I will still keep a very close eye on it… one can’t get too comfortable nowadays.
